I have always said'' pocketbook''. I wonder who else says this....? I feel sure it must be a regional thing~ Just sharing my choice.

Growing up, it was usually pocketbook, which morphed into purse, and then into handbag or bag.

Yes, I thought it was odd too. In Illinois I grew up with the term "purse" I think. Then in Central PA I notice people say "pocketbook." I personally use the term "bag" so I would choose "handbag" if "bag" is not available option as an option.

The first time I heard of this word was on this board! I had to look it up. LOL. I'm in California, but not "raised and born" in the US.

""Pocketbook"" just always sounds so odd to me. I don't know anyone that calls it that. It will always be a ""purse"" to me.

Exactly the same for me, word for word.

I think of it more as a generational thing more than a regional thing. My grandmothers said 'pocketbook' and my dad still says 'billfold' instead of 'wallet', but I don't know anyone of my generation (Gen X) or under who says either pocketbook or billfold.
