How do I keep cut greenery fresh outside in Ohio?

I went to Lowes and they gave me Christmas tree trimmings- they are some sort of fir or spruce. I have them soaking in buckets of water outside, and would like to arrange them in my vintage wheelbarrow, and accent them with oversize red plastic ornaments. Does anyone know how to keep them as fresh as possible? Normal Dec and Jan temps here in Ohio are in the 30 degree range. Thanks, in advance!
