The Loopy Ewe
Or, you can join Ravelry. A free community for knitters and crocheters.

I've been on Ravelry for several years ... and Lion Brand Studio in NYC is within walking distance. Have you tried their BonBons?
I'm "on the fence" about their patterns. Lots of patterns but few that I've used.
But - my choice for online free patterns is Drops (garn studio) and I get their yarn from Nordic Mart.

I'm a Hobby Lobby fan ... but they don't have any shops around here.

Knit Picks is great for good quality, affordable yarn. Their website is excellent.
If you haven't joined Ravelry, you must. It is an amazing site, extremely helpful, and members are always helpful and supportive of other knitters and crocheters. You will get the courage to try new things because members can help you if you get stuck. I've been a member several years and am still learning about all the site offers. (It's free, by the way, and they don't email you or sell your info.)

Being on the west coast, visiting the Lion Brand website is my only option, I'd love to travel to New York again and see the store in person one day!
There's an older striped scarf pattern that's my go-to gift or fundraiser project that uses the bulky wool yarn they make (I can't think of the name of now) and doesn't break the bank... the pattern and yarn have been in their rotation for years.

I like Earth Guild, but I've only bought their Christopher Sheep 100% wool yarns.

Jimmy Beans Wool has nice yarns and good pictures.
