seems like were in Fantasy Land!

On Q it seems like Fantasy Land this time of year. With the over the top decorated sets, dinner table settings, food displays, and wardrobe for the holidays. In real world we work and do chores and try to catch up with family on days off. Who has time to cook like David, decorate like Valerie and dress like a top notch model. Hubby and I dress professional for work, but downtime I want nice jeans, cute sweater and boots! House has tree, decorations on mantel and wreath on door. Dinner is ham or turkey, a side and salad. Not full blown 8 course dinner made from scratch! Family is scattered over country due to careers, so family around the fireplace is not done during holidays but we catch up in summer during family reunion. Many of my cousins also had parents and siblings pass this year, or they lost jobs, or their family moved due to job losses due to casinos closing here in NJ. Watching Q the other night while ironing made me think this was how it was growing up but times have changed! Anyone else agree?

Re: seems like were in Fantasy Land!

Well, lots of food is sold on the Q to make things easier for folks. You can also stop at any fast food restaurant. You can make from scratch what you want, how much you want, when you want...simple.

The same with decorating...how much and what you like it's all up to you. If you really want to put out more decor, it doesn't take that much extra time. If you came over our home during the holidays, it would be like a fantasyland...I decorate anything that doesn't move {#emotions_dlg.devil2}

That is no different than folks who like to start their holiday decorating just before Thanksgiving day...to even those who put up their tree Christmas eve and take it down the day after Christmas...and all those who decorate at varying times in December...

Dressing oneself, it's all the same..how dressy or casual is all up to the individual...

It just boils down to one's lifestyle/wants/needs/priorities...everyone is different Smile

Some like all the things you mention; to others it would be stressful and not worth the trouble. Decorations and tons of food don't make memories; being with your family or just getting in touch, that's what is important.

I wouldn't be interested in looking at tv shows or magazines that just looked like my house. I look at them for beautiful over the top things, and try to get an idea or two that I can use and make my own to make life better or prettier around here.

Re: seems like were in Fantasy Land!

I work ft, too. But after trying to have the WM version of Christmas I really wasn't happy. I felt like The Grinch. No one complained about Holiday Downsizing but it just didn't seem the same.

They come along but once a year. I have beautiful china, stemware, flatware, why not use it? JMHO that using Dixie Plates on Christmas is well, disrespectful if you celebrate the meaning of the holiday. I'll put on a nice sweater and slacks. Get my hair and nails done.

I enjoy cooking the entire meal from scratch but there are times I'll get a carryout pie or side dish. I don't have the sq footage that LR has in her home nor do I like the look of Kitsch on Steroids. But I do like to decorate.

I've rearranged my work schedule to allow for more time to plan/decorate and prepare this year. We've experienced some truly difficult years with job loss or family loss . Why not enjoy the good years the best we can?

Re: seems like were in Fantasy Land!

I think many people on here work (or have worked), have scattered families, want to dress comfortably on their down-time, and don't necessarily have time to cook 8 course meals. However, I enjoy watching these shows and getting a few helpful hints or new ideas that will help to enhance the busy life I have.

I work full-time and have two little ones (ages 6 months and 3 years) and I still try to find the time to decorate and make large family dinners, when possible. There is no way my home could look like a QVC set. They're just giving us ideas, that's all.

Re: seems like were in Fantasy Land!

As some others have hinted at, not all of everything Q pushes for the holiday season ends up in each and every person's house or lifestyle, It is more about getting ideas, a little fresh or added decor, a new recipe, and a new twist on the old table settings. Many of us enjoy a number of hosts and vendors, and like spending an hour or two with them here and there.

Q does a good job of enticing viewers into the holiday spirit, even though many think it is way over commercialized. My view is, if watching, getting inspired, and then cooking, decorating, and gift giving makes you happy, reminds you to do for others over self, and centers you on the reason for the season, it can't be all bad.
