For those of you who are world travelers, have you ever noticed if European women wear shorts in public?

Sure the very young girls do. Women are generally in skirts and dresses.

Yes, they wee shorts as well as dresses and slacks.

It depends on the occasion.

In France only very young women wear shorts in public. In chilly Paris this month, I even saw young women wearing shorts over tights, like the hot pants of old. In small towns and villages you'd never see women "of a certain age" wearing shorts in public. It's mostly skirts and dresses. I imagine it's different at warm beach resorts, where shorts would be more acceptable.

I think european women are more age appropriate than American women. You don't see women in their 70's dressing like teenagers as you do here. Various age groups have their own style.

When faced with senseless drama, spiteful criticism or misguided opinions walking away is the best way to defend yourself. To respond with anger is an endorsement of their attitude. -Dodinsky

If the reason you are asking the question is because you will be visiting, please be aware that most churches require your knees be covered (I think shoulders too?). The larger churches will have security out front and people will be turned away.

At resort areas in Italy I've seen women wear to knee, fuller leg shorts. (usually linen or linen like material) Elsewhere women in shorts are frequently tourists.

Yes, I have seen many European ladies wearing shorts in public. In fact, I have a few fashionable friends who comprise this group.

Oh my; how positively lovely!

We have a family home in a small village in the south of France...women of different ages wear full, knee length shorts w light summer sweaters or cotton tees and scarves to accessorize...such a cute, age appropriate look for wearing shorts...skirts and dresses are very prevalent there as well...:)))

Yes they do. I grew up in Italy. But it's also which part of Italy you go to. Southern Italy is conservative and more "religious" then the north, so older women are more modest in dress. But young women wear them and not just shorts, but short shorts. And tight!

How about slacks? Or is that more of an American thing?

If they go topless at the beach, why would they not wear shorts in public?

Unless women are guarded by religion/law/cultured to be covered, women are women...especially since the Internet made the World so much smaller. Our style is their style & visa versa....since designers are global. Though I DO have to say "girls, teens, young adult ladies" a different set of rules worldwide (think: Japan's Hello Kitty & Anime style)!

I debated with myself, if I should enter this thread. Well, since we are talking about European women, here is one. I go "home" once a year to see my family and friends, so I keep up with trends. We also skype almost daily.

I must say, that sidsmom is correct, European style is global though on the whole I would say that women of a certain age, tend to dress more age appropriate than they do here. They also - and I hate to generalize here - use less makeup and their clothing color choices are more demure. They wear less jewelry - again generally speaking. There are always exceptions, of course. When it comes to teens, young adults - all bets are off. lol

I am enjoying this thread. (European girl, who loves her jewelry and who wears bermuda shorts in public. It's too hot here in Virginia not to. Smile )

Interesting thread. I don't know anyone who lives in Europe nor have I ever been there, but my perception is that European women of a certain age would tend to wear dresses and skirts more than shorts. I think that is my romanticized view from watching old movies.

Personally, I wear both bermuda length shorts and knee length dresses and skirts (don't like maxi dresses/skirts). IMO skirts and dresses are more comfortable in summer heat because of the air flow around my legs. They can take you so many more places than shorts will. Unless I am going to be active or at an amusement park or something like that, I wear skirts and dresses. Btw I am 50ish.

They do not wear shorts in cities, on the beach yes. No spaghetti strapped clingy T shirts either, that's considered underwear. You will never see cut off ultra short shorts... The #1 thing that makes American tourists stand out is sneakers. Europeans wear open, airy, rather flat comfortable sandals in the Summer. They are proud, they want to look nice when leaving the house, not formal but put together. This does not mean they do not want to be comfortable, you can be both at the same time. You will find way less quantity clothes/shoes in their closets but better quality.

I am going back to Italy in 3 days.Younger women wear shorts expecially at the beach resorts. They don't usually wear snickers but nice leather sandals.Of course there are now in Europe millions of illegal aliens and new immigrants,so you can see every style possible.I remember when about 25 years ago in a small rich town women went to coffe shops with huge gold necklaces and earrings. Now they would snatch it off you.Anyway,in the small town where I am going to visit my parents I have to dress up to go to the supermarket, because everybody knows each other and they talk behind your back.I don't wear shorts there but nice skirts or dresses.
