Is Dooney and Bourke as prestigious a brand as Coach?

Started 1365454780.097 in Fashion Talk | Last reply 1366283355.453 by stevieb

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I see more coach bags than I do Dooney and Bourke bags and was wondering since they are about the same price point which is better quality and more popular?

(PS--I do not need a name brand bag I was just wondering about these two bags)

I guess it's a matter of taste. I don't have any of either but I think Coach is more simple and elegant. Dooney is very heavy, stiff and utilitarian looking to me.

I've been a Kate Spade girl for many years, but before that I carried Coach (when Coach had their very classic styles).

If I were to choose between Coach and Dooney, I would gravitate towards Coach. However, I would choose a leather bag in a classic style.

I have both, Coach bags are usually more expensive, if that is what you want to know!

I think they are about the same but you likely see more coach because there are many more knockoffs out there.

I do think it is.

I think they're very comparable. I lean more towards Coach but that's only because I find the Dooney bags I'm most interested in are a little too heavy for me. Both lines carry very nice.

I tried being patient but it took too long.

I prefer Coach--better quality in my opinion

I have both Dooney and Coach, and I much prefer Coach. They are expensive, but once you buy from their website they send you all kinds of e-mail discounts. They even have a Coach Factory outlet that will e-mail you with discounts.

I prefer D&B. They have held up much better for me than Coach, plus I do not see myself coming and going, as when carrying a Coach bag.

Neither label would be considered "high end" in my experience.

I don't know about calling either prestigious lol but I think Coach is better to me.

I like them better. I agree with the poster who said D&B are very stiff and heavy feeling as the leather is very hard.

I see more Coach out there.

Of late I have actually been buying Michael Kors...I have tons of Coach and am now building a MK collection lol..

I can tell a Coach knock off pretty easy though and I have seen less of them then I used to. I think Coach is really cracking down on the counterfits.

Dperry, Coach used to be a very prestigious brand before they started selling very inexpensive purses at their outlet stores. Now, EVERYONE has a Coach. Their leather purses are still very nice.

I think Coach is more fashionable and Dooney can be, for lack of better description old fashioned looking. Just my opinion....If I were to spend upwards ot $200 to $400 for a bag, that sort of thing is important to me even though both bags are well made.

Neither is high-end or considered a luxury brand, but Coach seems to have more modern shapes and styles.

I agree with Wakefield, D&B, particularly with their duck motif, comes across as dated.

ITA. . .Now it seems like everyone has a Coach. Middle and high school students are carrying them, thanks to the nearby outlet. I'm at the point that if I buy a Coach bag, it's only going to be the leather. The fabric bags wear out too quickly.

ETA: I just recalled that Coach is all over one of our elementary schools too. I've seen lots of Coach backpacks, iPad cases, umbrellas, and small purses.

I have both but prefer Coach. Lighter weight, classier looking, nicer leather but whoever said there are a lot of knockoffs around, you are right. So if you want people to know you are carrying the real deal, go with Dooney. Wink

I have both and consider them to be equivalent. Both have held up well for me over the years. I seem to gravitate to my Coach bags more because I find the D&B to be heavier to carry. Coach sends me coupons frequently so I never by one of their bags without using a coupon.

Yes, I prefer Dooney

I think both have cachet and both are made well and are quality. Coach is now going back to the classic looks from what I've seen in the Coach store (not the outlet, thats entirely different). I think its a matter of what style you like as to which one you choose.

Coach has been around longer than D&B...and styles of yesterday are still considered classic. I bought my first Coach back in 1978 when the leather was weighty and they didn't have to slap the word COACH on it, unlike today. Both Coach and D&B have "dumbed" down their brands so much, I don't consider either one "Prestigious". Handbags that you can buy with a coupon, at an outlet or on a televised mass retailer show CAN'T be consider "prestigious"....no matter HOW much you spend. Sorry.

I think they're both very nice handbags.

Finding a great handbag, regardless of brand is prestigious enough.

You nailed it. I have quite a few vintage coach bags and they are way far superior to the bags currently being made. Don't buy either any more. Don't care for the "dumbed down" stuff.

I have both. I think the quality is comparable but I am more inclined to carry Dooney because less people have them. If there were a mad rush to go buy Dooneys, I'd go back to Coach.

well the stores are not in the EXPENSIVE/UPSCALE section of our mall, but rather in the regular section...... the handbags there in the high end section are louis vuitton, michael kors.
