Leggings question

So what exactly would you wear leggings with? I have some black riding boots and just ordered some brown ones. Do you wear a long top, like a tunic, or dresses or what?

Hi cj -- If the boots leave some leg showing up to whatever else you're wearing, you might try leggings same color as boots for a slimmer/sleeker or more coverd-up look . ---- You could also wear one of those uneven-hem, very-long tunics over leggings & whatever shoes you like. ----- Great old classic going way back to the Beatnik era, late 40s/early 50s ::: cotton/long/solid color bigshirt (white was the color then) with sleeves rolled up below elbow, over matching dark-color leggings (or opaque tights) & flats -- black ballet flats & black leggings or tights were the classic then. Fun scarf at neck or to tie hair back, slouchy bag if going out... it's a cute & comfortable oldie-but-goodie look. ----- Since obviously this isn't the beat era, lol -- DO vary or change that however you like. I often use some variation as my 'at-home casual hostess' outfit; I'm quite short & my legs have never been my best feature so I can't get 'too' wild with the variations, but I'll do a chambray or silk bigshirt, or a great print, or do the flats/leggings in dark colors other than black, or in dark color-on-color patterns.

Tunics of any kind look best with leggings in my opinion. Covering the behind is critical to pulling off a great legging outfit. I wear black boots with black leggings and gray leggings. I have brown boots I wear with denim. Play around with the look, no hard fast rule other than be happy with your over all outfit look :) Last edited on 12/11/2012

I tried being patient but it took too long.

I wear leggings (jeggings) with a longer tunic sweater or top and boots in the winter. I only wear the denim ones, I don't like the knit ones.

haha... great advice from shoptilldrop, too : 'cover the behind'... oh unless maybe you're Heidi Klum, or Twiggy. Even Audrey Hepburn covered hers in those old-movie leggings or tights get-ups.

luvmypupz -- so glad you brought up sweaters too... That was another cute oldie style; since there weren't any women's tunics in style then, young women or teens wore their brothers' or boyfriends' sweaters/sweatshirts over leggings or tights & loafers.

I wear mine (always black) with long sweaters or tunics. Then I wear boots. My rule is to keep my butt and crotch covered. I am in my forties and a 1x so I try to keep the goodies out of sight! It just looks better.

I aim for a monochromatic look to not chop up my already kinda short body so tops are usually grey or black also.

Yes I agree with everybody---wear a longer top over them be it a tunic or a cardigan or vest and I wear clogs with my leggings; actually they aren't really leggings but skinny jeans. Not quite as tight as leggings but still able to put them into boots and they don't show the ripples that I have. I love the ones from Macys Style and Co. brand. So very flattering on this 58 year old bod.

I often wear my leggings with a black turtleneck and black boots (high or low heel) Then I cover it up with a great jacket or coat. This is a great look for shopping and I like it because I can try things on over it.

I don't feel I need to cover my behind with a long jacket as I have a slim athletic figure and my legs are my best feature.

Love this idea of wearing your dresses over the leggings. I'm sure you look great!!!

This is one of my favorite subjects. CJ, you can wear leggings with anything at all. Whatever you want. They (in my opinion) did us all a favor when they invented them. They're just great for everything. It doesn't matter what size you are or how tall or not tall you are, they're awesome.

You can't go wrong with a tunic, jacket, sweater, long/short top whatever; and with riding boots (OMG) you've got a lot of options. Any of the designers at QVC would be able to outfit you nicely. I love leggings and I'll never give them up. You can dress up, or dress down. Everyone has their own personal Legging look. I like them all. Long tops, short tops, short skirts and even in some cases a pair of shorts over leggings. I do that a lot in the early Summer. Definitely can't go wrong no matter what you do. They're great time savers too.

When I'm in a hurry and don't have time to do the entire Barbie Doll Dress Up thing, I can toss on a top and go. It's just that easy. You won't have any trouble finding something. Toss your hair in a pony, or do a headband, braid swept over to the side, up-do, big bouncy loose and casual curls or whatever. I could go on and on and on. But I'll bet whatever you pick to wear, you'll look great!{#emotions_dlg.tt1}

I wear them with a long sweater or with a "man's" Oxford style shirt - particularly those sold at Fresh Produce. I like to make sure that whatever I have on covers me to mid thigh. And always with boots of some kind!Last edited on 12/12/2012

I'll be 49 in less than a month, I'm a size 6 in normal clothes and I work out. I have nothing to "hide" or "cover." I don't feel completely comfortable in leggings without a sweater that comes down over most or even all of my behind. I don't wear big square sweaters, they're fitted (and fitted is different than tight, I don't wear anything tight!), but they're a little longer. I have the right body and behind for leggings, I just can't wear them with something short that shows my whole rear. That's just me. I've seen women who are big and not toned wearing leggings and showing a lot more than I do. I don't think it's a good look!

I agree. Having a great body does not make being that exposed respectable.

For a lazy casual winter day I wear them with Uggs or Coach rain boots, a long tunic sweater, sometimes even a sweatshirt. I live in a small mountain town where fashion is not what you would wear in L.A.
