How long should a maxi dress be?

Started 1304565505.3 in Fashion Talk | Last reply 1304642500.927 by Me And My Shadow

I got the Motto maxi dress and it's really long. It's not dragging on the ground and I don't trip on it, but it's close. Is this how they're worn, or should I hem it, and if so, how much?????

Hi there! My opinion is that I like them ankle length. Some tend to like them slightly above. I do think it depends on the type of shoe you intend to wear with it. If you are intending to wear a rather high (4" or so) wedge, I would go for ankle or slightly above. If you are planning on a ballet flat, flat sandal or flip-flop, I would actually think 3" above the ankle, so it doesn't look to "nightgown-ish". Just my opinion. I don't think there's a right or wrong, just what you feel looks most flattering.

I like mine ankle length. Just short enough so that I can walk without feeling like I am going to get tangled up in it. I am 5'7 so this length seems to work on me. Perhaps if one is more petite, it could be a little bit shorter? I say go with whatever looks good to you and makes you feel sassy!

The ankles should show. But then everything now a days is a matter of taste. Nothing is "wrong". I remember from the 70's, the mini, micro mini, the midi and the maxi. Mico was like shorts, a mini was mid thigh to about 4 inches above the knee. The midi is lower calf length. The maxi is above the ankle to below ankle.

It shouldn't be floor length, are you under 5'3"? Have fun. Are you going to hem it yourself?

In the Seventies, we wore maxis a couple of inches above the ankle.

Because it's a general term, just about any skirt length in the "neighborhood" of the ankle was considered a maxi.

A midi is a shorter length -- about 4 inches above the ankle.

Hope this helps!

I remember the micro. It was a toss-up whether you were wearing a more demure "micro" which is only a bit more material than something shorter -- technically shorts that are known as "hot pants."

They are usually close to e length, but you should wear it at the length that you are comfortable with.

Thanks, girls. I'm going to have it hemmed to ankle length. I would do it myself, but I don't have a serger to do the rolled hem that's already on it.

I loved those Hot Pants! Hahah. Those were the days. Some of the skirts were so short one had to wear matching "pants" underneath.

My personal opinion about maxi dresses is that, when they are too long, they look like gowns...so the length I prefer is at least a few inches above the ankle.....The most important thing is what you feel comfortable with and your own personal taste.
