Ok, so I have a Windows XP laptop. How unsafe is it to use. I'm afraid to go out on the Internet. So there's no virus protection out there? I'm at a loss at what to do. I know I need to get a new laptop and that is also concerning me because I'm reading about Windows 8.1 updates may not be protected. Not sure of all the details on that. But it's like what do I buy? I'm stumped.

Window 8.1 is fine, meaning it is getting Window security updates. I would look at Best Buy online for a laptop. You can read some product reviews, and decide what computer maybe be right for your needs. You can buy online or in a local store big box retailer.

Thanks for your help. I will check out who might carry protection and also check out new laptops.

You can get virus protection but Microsoft is no longer supporting the operating system with security updates. Virus software can't protect against operating system vulnerabilities.

I upgraded from XP to Win 8 about a month ago. (I love Win 8, BTW.). Win 8 is lots more secure than XP. It has a built-in security package (Windows Defender), but you can run a security package of your choice if you want to.

I posted on this and for some reason it is no longer here. Microsoft has a free program called Laplink. It will transfer files from XP to Windows 8 or 8.1. Click on the link.
