I am searching for a machine which converts old VCR tapes into DVD's. It is sold on QVC. Can anyone help?

I think the one you may be thinking of is E166457 - Sony DVDirect Multi-Function DVD Recorder It was featured in the 3 pm Electronics show today.

I suggest a google search for VHS/DVD player/recorder. Or, DVD combo. Keep in mind, most copyrighted tapes won't be able to be copied.

For copyrighted tapes you just put masking tape over the space where the tab would be and they copy just fine.

I got mine from Newegg much cheaper than Q and no tax and free shipping.

Any VHS tape that has Macrovision anti-copying encoded can't be copied to dvd. It has nothing to do with the tab on the plastic case it is part of the embedded code on the tape. The little tab thing is just so you can't physically copy a tape but that isn't the same as having anti-copying encoding.

This particular item IS NOT A GOOD DEAL! First of all, you have to have a VHS machine to run this if you are transferring VHS to this DVD machine. Secondly, HSN has a DVD/VHS tape recorder and player for the same price - I ordered mine from them in December and I LOVE MINE. I not only can take my old VHS tapes and transfer them onto DVDs, but I can play my VHS tapes and DVDs on this machine and also record from television. So, you see for the same price the one at HSN is better and does all of this. It's easy to set up, I did so in about 20 minutes. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE mine.

My Toshiba DVR 670 can dub tapes to dvd's and it does a good job. It has a rather large instruction manual, however. It's 100 pages. If I can do it, anyone can.

Thanks for explaining that. I've seen them present this item before, and they never mention that.

You're welcome Troop-Angel, being a fellow shopper, we all have to look out for each other. Don't get me wrong, the Q has good products too, but if you want to spend that kind of money - it just makes more sense to get a PLAYER AND RECORDER (for both VHS/DVDs) - not just a recorder. Good luck.

I bought one from the Q several years ago. It is a Panasonic--both VHS and DVD player and recorder. It looks like they no longer carry it; but you may be able to find it at Walmart or electronics store. It does a good job of recording to DVD.
