Keurig problems

Started 1346190158.4 in Coffee Talk | Last reply 1349588266.743 by CamilleP

I've been reading various Keurig discussions and have not yet read of anyone dealing with what I am, so I've decided to post and hope somebody has an idea that might help. I got my Keurig "Platinum" in November of '09, and until recently it has worked fine with regular care. Recently it started "short-cupping", not dispensing all the water in the programmed dose through the K-cup but shunting some of it back through the overflow tube into the water resevoir. I de-scaled three seperate times, and the first time it seemed to solve the problem, but in just a couple of weeks it was back to mis-behaving. I've probed all the needle holes and there's no impediment to flow that I can find. I finally called Keurig last week, and the CS rep I spoke with had no solutions, and could only suggest I replace the brewer, offering me a nice discount on a replacement machine from them. I'm really torn, I have a ton of K-cups sitting on my counter, and I really love the convenience of the Keurig system, but I'm also frustrated that these machines seem to be so poorly made that they die so fast. I brought home (from work) my Krups electric drip coffeemaker that has to be at least ten years old, and it still works just fine. That means I will have to use instant coffee at work (ick) or buy another brewer for work.

Has anyone else had their Keurig malfunction the same way, putting water back into the resevoir through the overflow tube instead of into the cup? If you have, were you able to find a way to fix it?

And if it's permanently busted, do I get a new one for as long as it lasts, or do I give up on the whole system and get rid of a ton of K-cups? Anyone know of a good way to sell K-cups, or do I just donate?

Thanks for any info or opinions you can share!!!

Ours does this. I just make a big cup, then top it off with a small cup thus making a whole cup! HTH

I had same problem. It was about 8 months old. I had no receipt, no box but returned it at kohls for the same item as an even exchange. That is the policy. I heard that bed, bath and beyond has the same policy. Give that a try.

Try dumping out all of the water with the filter lever in both poisiton (unplugged).

Then phug it in & give it a try.

This may or may not help, but its definitely worth a shot.

Like many customers, my Keurig Platinum started "short-cupping" me after less than a year. After various attempted fixes with Keurig CS, they replaced my unit for free (still in warranty). They asked that I return only the K-cup holder (which was supposed to render the first unit useless, since Keurig does not sell that piece separately).

However, those pieces are available on E-bay for about $20. I bought one, and now I have two perfectly good units. Try buying one. Its a whole lot cheaper than replacing a $175 machine.

Try removing the reservoir and using a q-tip or some such thing to 'clean' out the area under the reservoir where the water goes through. Our water has a lot of minerals and rust and this seems to help....

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies, the only one I haven't tried is the Q-tip, so I'll see if that does any good. Since the machine is almost three years old, Keurig only offered me a discount on a new one, I did call them already.

Anybody want to buy a bunch of K-cups, especially hot apple cider and hot chocolate? For sale, cheap!

BJR, I don't know if you can access my e-mail by clicking on my user profile or not, but we could exchange e-mails by mutually agreeing ahead of time on a time to post our e-mails, confirm we have them, and then going back to edit our posts and remove the e-mail addresses from them. However, I must request your forbearance and patience right now. One of my nine year old dogs was just diagnosed with bone cancer, and we will be spending all our time possible spoiling her completely before sending her across the Rainbow Bridge this coming weekend. After that, I will be available to exchange e-mails and get a box of k-cups packed up to ship to you. I hope that's okay. It just seems like the death of my Keurig machine was the first tiny warning of several huge disasters that got dumped into my life, culminating in this cancer diagnosis. I just lost the 12.5 year old mother of this dog in July, and now I'm losing her daughter, it's inconceivable that this is happening.

I am sorry to hear about your dog being ill and your loss as well. I too am an animal lover. We just lost one too. So I understand and of course would be glad to wait. Just post when you are ready and I will try to look out for it. BJR.

Did you know you have to take that K-cup holder out and take it apart to clean that too? I didn't until I called them. Be careful though, because mine broke when I tried to get it apart. They sent me a new one for free though. I think you can find an online video somewhere.

Thanks for being so kind, BJR, I really appreciate it. I am ready to try to exchange e-mails at this point, what time zone are you in? I am in the Pacific zone, so we can try to set a mutual time to post e-mails, and then take it private from there. I'll check back in as often as I can during the work day and this evening until I hear back from you, and thanks, again!

My Keurig did the same thing as yours, just a little sooner.

The CS rep had me go over some troubleshooting while she remained on the phone. But the machine still short-cupped.

They sent me out a brand new replacement. If I remember correctly, mine was that same 09 model and that model had electronic problems.

I think you should call back and talk to higher-up in CS. See if they will replace it for you.

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your dog and the illness in your remaining dog. :(

All the best to you. Take good care. :)

Where did you purchase it from?

Me, we HAVE to have our Keurig! I did get a free replacement from them because my B70 died on me. If I were to buy another I would get it from Bed Bath & Beyond. You can return it at any time - with or without a receipt (they can look it up using your credit card/debit card info).

Camille,

I managed to get on here but QVC 's site has not been letting me log in, i try and nothing happened, called them twice. So I am here for the moment, my time zone is EST. So I am on the Q's usual time. When is a good time for you. And I will try to be here unless the Q's site fails me again. BJR.

Check out this topic! She describes what she did to solve the same problem you are having.

I see in your post you said you checked the needle holes, but I just thought it was possible you did not check the part that is described in this other post.

Okay, we have a three hour time difference, so I just got sat down after an evening's worth of chores (still watering roses w/ a watering stake, but don't need to be present for that, whew!) and it's past eleven for you. I think we need to shoot for tomorrow during the daytime for us both! Do you have access to your computer during your work day? Any time after 9 my time/12 your time would be fine with me, if you can get online from work. If you can't, what time after you get home would be convenient for you? I do have online access from work, so I can probably match times while you are at home. We aren't worrying about anything perishable, thankfully, no great rush needed. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Okay, you just put your e-mail in like I am about to do. Just type it in as text.

That uses "at" for the @ and "dot" for the . so that spambot harvesters don't automatcally pick up the address.

I'll watch for your e-mail that you got mine, and then go back and edit the post to remove my address. Then you just e-mail me, and that will give me your return address.

Edited, got your message, BJR, off to retrieve your e-mail, thanks!
