Do you deep condition before PERMANENT hair coloring?

Started 1373825111.883 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1373842663.877 by happywenner

I am getting my hair colored this week and I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about deep conditioning before permanent hair coloring.

I have read some people do and some people do not.

This is not for the semi or demi colors.

What do you do?

Thanks ladies.

I worked as a hair colorist for years. I encouraged to do it before and after and now I mix in a teaspoon of coconut oil to my color while I am mixing it.

I have used a lot of different oils on hair both on others and mine and I find coconut oil to be good, I mix it in with deep conditioners after color, I don't do it before but if you feel comfortable doing it before and after, you should do that.

Thank you Irshgrl. I go to get my hair colored. I don't think I could do it myself. So I thought about doing a deep conditioning today for color on Tuesday.

Does anyone else deep condition before, after or both?

Irshgrl-I have read about putting some Argan oil in the dye mixture-but I have alot of gray hair when I go in for my roots-will the dye still cover the grays with an oil mixed in?? When the girl washes me she puts a cond. in for a few min.& then rinses out.

I wondered the same thing blueyesmom. I am getting roots done and I didn't know if it was a good thing or not to use a deep conditioning oil.

Everyones hair is different so the only way to truly find out is to actually do it. I do this to my mother who is 73 and about 70- 80% (without color) and it works just fine for her. I find the only graying on her hair is from regrowth, it doesn't fade and show the gray. I just do a one process color on her though. We don't do highlights. We do a blonde shade and find that the grays give some dimension enough so that we don't highlight on top of that. I have been using coconut oil in my color and as a scalp and hair treatment overnight that I shampoo out in the morning and as a blonde my hair looks the healthiest and shiniest it ever has ever been my mother feels the same too. She has very course and thick hair and her whole life it has not been so shiny and kind of drab. I have used argan, jojoba, olive oil, all kinds of oil, you name it I have tried it and for ME and mi madre this has worked best for us. That certainly doesnt mean it would be best for everyone. Everyones hair and skin is different and what works great for one doesn't for another.

I say try the Argan if you want. You only need a teaspoon, you probably know yourself if you have fading and you will be able to tell if Argan would add more. I don't have any fading because I don't have a lot of gray yet but my mum does and she really likes the addition of oil. Hope that helps.

I've been coloring my hair with permanent color for over 25 years. I've never deep conditioned before, after, or inbetween.

However, nearly daily I message a few drops of jojoba oil into my damp hair before styling.

So far so good... No dryness or breakage.

Irshgrl-Thank you so much for all the info. I do coconut oil scalp & hair treatments and also other oils as well. I also feel these oils do a better job than any jar ones people buy-and its cheaper too. I also use it overnight and wash next day. I have medium brown hair and just do a single process. I have it done at a salon. I searched for someone who uses a more gentle formula-no ammonia-I like what he uses on me-no bad smell-it looks very nice, covers the gray,no shoe polish look.I'm going to bring argan oil with me next time and see what he says. Thanks again- Lori

Yes, thanks so much for the information. I do deep condition a lot; but, I did not know if it would stop the color from adhearing to my hair if I did a hot oil conditioner before.

I color my own hair every 5 weeks, never deep condition.

I do a remoist treatment 2 days before and the night before an oil treatment. I get a blowout right after my coloring and do not cleanse again until 3 days and then I do another remoist{deep moisturizing} Normally I would do the deep conditioner{remoist} right after the coloring but most times we do not have the time at the salon anymore. I am a WEN girl {hence the remoist} I know Chaz and all of his stylists do a remoist treatment right after the coloring, then cleansing as step 3 before cut & blow-out.
