Do hosts get commission on sales during their airing?

Started 1355505286.7 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1355565479.85 by D Oro

I heard once that the hosts get commission based on how many items they sale during their airing? Does anyone know if that is true?

I would like to know too. As much as they talk (fast) you would think they do. I noticed that all the hosts have stepped it up a notch (fast talking) during the holiday season. That's why I enjoy the jewelry shows because they are usually low key.

The show hosts receive no commission on the items they sell.

They most certainly need to meet certain sales targets. The Q keeps close tabs on how much it sells of each item and which host, etc. etc. How is to say whether or not they get bonuses based on performance?

No. They do not get a commission. They are rated on sales by other methods. Dollars per minute, for instance. It is a true science that is drilled down to each individual host, time on auto each sku#, on line ordering, return rates, spikes in sales, etc. Everything, but everything is analyzed and charted.

I have had my eye on the T3 TSV, but Shawn was presenting it this am and she was driving me so crazy I didn't. I felt like she was just fast talking me into an impulse purchase.....even though I have wanted one for a very long time. The thought came to me that I would rather buy it from a more sincere host.

The bonus is job retention. Better hours. Better times. More leeway in a few aspects. Now there are always contests that have perks. Not just among the hosts and the production teams that work with them, but the call centers get to join in the reindeer fun too. Lol. That is true of most companies. Especially when they are doing well and want to keep morale up.

When Kathy Levine left there was a going away party for her on air. Most of the hosts were on air to send her off. There were many comments about Kathy getting the biggest bonuses. I think each of the other host's said something about the bonus. After Kathy left, no other host had the majority of shows with Joan Rivers. So, who knows how they are paid now.

They do, now I believe they call it "bonuses". Once Kathy Levine & Jeff Hewson were on and Kathy said they fight over the jewelry shows because they have the highest commission.

When JRT left QVC and started her own website and message board, someone asked about the hosts and commission and she said the hosts do not get paid commission.

Yet that seems unfair simply because a host is selling more of an item that happens to be pricier.

The hosts do not get commission but they get alot of free perks, stock options, travel expenses, samples of the merchandise, 30% employee discounts and I imagine their raises are based on sales %.

I think if they were on commission, they'd be even more frenzied than they are now.

Travel expenses are paid by QVC as travel is part of their job. Having worked in entertainment, all of the hosts have egents that negotiate salaries, perks, etc...

I've always thought....if you're the host that's presenting the TSV, you get an extra incentive if it sells out. Nothing to base that on...just speculation. They're sales associates...it's their job to whip us up in a frenzy to buy. Usually from the day before Christmas to NYEve, they quiet down.

Does anyone remember the uber expensive gold shows they would have 2 days before Christmas?? They would trot out the 4-figure pieces that were "investment" pieces, when....you KNOW they were targeting the guys of the "oh, craap, I forgot to buy her something" crowd!!! Wonder if they'll do that this year....

In her first book Kathy Levine did say that they were commission/bonus based on sales. Maybe that has changed in the interval.

I remember the once in a lifetime show they had...they had "the North Pole" in the Adirondacks for sale. It was millions! I don't recall it being on easy pay though! LOL

You would think so by how frantic they act, but probably have bonus's by performance sales.

Although some would be happier performing !

No, agents are not involved in shopping channel salaries. They have an HR department, department heads, managers, etc. to weigh in on wages, based on performance reviews and recommendations. Just like at most corporations, the hosts are not allowed do discuss their salaries and/or bonuses. All the employees get the employee discount. Most companies that send their employees on business trips cover the expenses. Nothong mysterious here, just a corporation trying tp stay in the black, please their shareholders, and maintain a good workforce. Just my opinion.
