Help- my hair color came out too DARK. What now??

Hi everyone, Well. I'm a dope. I decided I was sick of my ombré highlights and decided to go back to my base color of a neutral medium brown. I used a semipermanent at home color and now my hair is very dark, dark brown where I had my highlights. The rest of my hair is just a shade lighter. I feel so dumb for trying to save money, but I just didn't have the extra 75.00 plus tip that my stylist charges ( and really, I didn't care for her ombré job either) . Anyway, I did this about a week ago and it's not really fading anymore after washing it with a sulfate shampoo....what can I do now to lighten it up to a medium golden brown? I really don't want to damage my hair any further, but this color has got to go! Any ideas??

Did you try a clarifying shampoo? This happened to my friend a few years ago, and this is what was recommended to her. She said it would eventually fade the color, and it did. Good luck!

I used Suave green apple scent shampoo, which is pretty drying ( I use WEN). It did help a bit, but I noticed after a few days that the color was not showing up in the lather, so I stopped. I guess the Wen isn't helping because, I swear, not a drop of color was in the Wen lather (for lack of a better word). Thanks for your reply!

I share your pain!! I did one of those lasts-28-shampoos-type of color. I got Light Brown, and man...my hair is so dark! Very upsetting. I think these things run dark. Next time I guess I'd use dark blonde or something. Ive been washing my hair 2x a day trying to get it to fade. I hope its really only 28 shampoos, only a few more to go. I'm doing the same as you, just using a cheap Suave shampoo, and then packing in Remoist.

Msmotley, I feel for us both! I feel so goth or something. I won't even wear a dark colored top b/c it's too much dark on dark. What's with these formulas?

Don't worry. Your hair will lighten up on it's own over time. The more you shampoo, the more the color will fade. You can also do OIL treatments, which will strip the color out of your hair.

I just went thru the same thing a month ago. My hair "looked" almost BLACK!. It's now back to it's original "golden brown" color.

Patience grasshoppahhhhh!

We tried to warn you. Use a good conditioner that stays on your hair for 10-15 minutes. That should help take out a lot of color. Have a friend pull some highlites through your hair around your face . That can also help. Good luck.

It will lighten up more each washing. I have to do a blond color to get a light brown color.

Yes, the colors do run darker. I have medium/dark brown hair and color my hair myself. The color I use is a 6N which is a dark blonde and the color is perfect. It comes out golden brown. I love it. It looks dark but not really, if you can understand that. LOL

Use baby shampoo - most think it's gentle because it's for babies and doesn't sting the eyes - but it's meant to strip out all the junk (food, spit up etc) that babies get in their hair.

Or, just look under your kitchen sink. Use any liquid dish washing detergent - most are harsh enough to strip out some of the color with a few shampoos - do a deep conditioning treatment after.

Decided to change up my SN a bit, and maybe this is a bit clearer :)

You can only change color with color so you need to match your haircolor to a color thats close to what you're trying to achieve and theres some wait time before you can recolor . If you don't want to try it your self go to a salon and they can help you but it will be pricey. Have you tried WEN some times it can change the hair color and make it look richer.

We've all done this. You need to re-color in the blondes. I would suggest dark blonde. Don't worry about damaging your hair, it will be fine. Just use that conditioner they give you with the color box, it's heavy duty.

I agree with the other poster, you really have to go much lighter to get the color you actually want. Good luck.

yes, put prell on dry hair and work in well, leave on than wash as usual and let dry. If it is still too dark do this again.

I always get a shade or two lighter than what I want but sometimes my roots end up too light for the rest of my hair.

I was told that you can not lighten with another color. You have to take out the dark color first.

I have colored mine too dark before, and was told (by whom, I cannot remember) to make a paste with prell and baking soda. Put this on damp hair and let it set, for about 5-10 min rince out. This has always worked for me. Good Luck.

A friend of mine is a hair stylist, and she says to use Dawn dish detergent. She says it works better than the clarifying shampoos.

Unfortunately, you had to learn the hard way about box color. If your unsure about the result ALWAYS go at least one shade lighter if not two shades than the color you desire because the initial result will always be very intense, as you found out. You can always go darker. I too use a neutral medium brown and trust me, it takes about 4-6 washings for the color to calm down. Just be patient you will get there. It is not worth damaging your hair and make a bad situation worse.

If you can stand to wait, it will lighten up over the course of a few weeks.

I would be patient and not add any more color or use a product to take it out. It will fade over time but over shampooing and adding more color will be bad for your hair.

Be patient Smile

I totally agree with the Color Oops, I did the same thing with my hair and used a dark ash brown and my hair turned black. I used color oops and it came out a medium red color, then I put medium brown over that and it came out great, without damaging my hair. I had tried everything to lighten my hair before that to no avail. Color Oops is great.

I used John Frieda light golden brown, color foam. It turned out a shade DARKER. I was shocked. My sister said to use next time a shade lighter than usual. Dark golden blonde.

She also said her girlfriend who is a hairdresser, washes her hair in the original green Palmolive dish liquid. By the way, I loved the color foam. It was rich & creamier than Clairol's foam.

If you have not used a clarifying shampoo then you could also purchase a lighter color and leave on for 10 minutes. That should lighten up the color.

Yep,I think that green palmolive is like the McGuyver of products..it has many uses and works well. I have washed in it many times and really my hair was not any worse for the wear. the semi permanent stuff will fade.
