Just curious. Years ago when I started working, one of my newly made friends was from NYC, and she said she stood on line and I said I stand in line I (California). We were always trying to prove to each other, without success, that we were right. What do you say--on or in??? Is this a regional preference?
Thanks!

I stood "in" line in S.CA and still stand "in" line in TX, too.
Used to love "in-line skating", but that's another topic and just shows my age.

"In" line, and "by" accident, as opposed to the kids nowadays who say "on" accident, etc. No proper grammar being taught in the schools, because the teachers were not taught, terrible that in this country proper grammar cannot be taught. People learning English as a second language speak better grammar than students in this country, a sore spot for me.

I loved in-line skating too. I gave it up a few years ago--figured it was better for the health of my bones!

I wait on line if it's a phone call. Stand in the line if at the check out. Now if the line is in the sand, one would stand on it rather than in it.

This reminds me of the outrage some feel when a Q host says, on the day rather than just today.
