That's sad news, I am a BC survivor and count my blessings everyday. Does she like to read. I was thing about a couple of good books, she could just relax and read, or maybe a few up beat comedy DVD's. I am sure her energy level is low until her treatment is finished.

How old is she?
Does she have children?

She's in late 50's and has a grown son.

So because of her age and having a son, here's what I'm thinking:
1) something girly, if she's girly, like a manicure or massage (I know that she has to be careful with her skin because of treatments.)
2) a special "friends" outing to a movie/teahouse
3) come over and make her a favorite treat- dessert, appetizer, lunch
4) find something plush and cozy like a throw, a robe, pajamas, or nice slippers that she can wear on treatment days.
5) her favorite season of TV shows (or movie) on DVD
6) make a coupon book of things she can "cash" in- a ride to treatment, loads of laundry, take out for dinner, a run to the library or bookstore
7) an at home spa day- homemade face masks, lemon cucumber water, etc.
8) a session of acupuncture
9) new flannel sheets or bath towels
10) a "husband" pillow or lap tray for days when she lounges in bed
11) a heated throw sized electric blanket (Sunbeam)

Well, if your name implies what I think it does, how about making something for her, like a sweater, socks, or a throw, and having her pick out the yarns she'd like from your assortment?

Lola gave you a great list. I was my brother's support through all of his doctor appointments and cancer treatments when he had lung cancer. One of the things he really appreciated was a soft warm throw to take to appointments. He was always cold. I put together an 'appointment' bag that we took every to every hospital visit. We kept water, snacks, the throw, reading material, etc. In that bag and it was always packed to go.
There were many times that we had to be at the hospital all day even though that was not what we expected. It was great to have something like this with us as the hospital food was not great.
You friend is lucky to have someone like you close by. My best to you both. LM
