If you know what kind of music he likes one or two CDs are always welcomed I think.

I think the CDs are a good idea. Also, if you know his interests, a nice book is something I like to give.

CD's sounds like a bad idea to me. I would only do that if I knew what CD's he wanted. Even if you know what music or artists he likes, you don't know what CD's he already has. Movie theatre passes make a good gift, gift cards to restaurants or coffee shops are also good gift. And there's nothing wrong with good old cash.

All my guys like gift cards. One year I put them in those plastic mazes and made them work for it. It was a big hit. If you go to amazon and type in maze for gift card, you will see a nice selection.

I was shopping for a 17 yr. old GGS this a.m. - that is a tough age. I agree, if you do not know anything specific for a DVD or CD - it is not a good idea, as he might already have it. If you know the parent I would ask for suggestion for that. Also, I know you do not want to do a gift card, and I really do not like them either, but this year I think I will do that for the GGS, they actually love them. Other idea- the pj pants that all of the stores have so many of, men's cologne - something light.

Itune cards are great! He can get and enjoy his own type of music. Or give a gift card to Best Buy or FYE stores. He might like a watch. You should be able to buy one in your price range. One of my sons uses sets of blank CDs for burning his own music CDs. Good luck!

I know you wanted to stay away from gift cards, but iTunes usually works well in our family.

Just wanted to say that young people don't wear watches anymore. They all use their cell phones to check the time. And they don't seem to buy CD's either, they download everything.

Does he have any hobbies?

I think movie passes would be good or tickets to a nearby amusement park.

Gift cards often get lost, especially by youngmen, but iTunes cards seem to be used quickly.

I didn't come here to argue.- Peg Bracken

If you do get him a gift card...make it to a place of choices...Walmart...comes to mind...or places where he is not limited to specific stuff...just in case...

I bought each Grand one Lego gift...(they are much younger then your guy....) then a gift card to ITunes..and one to Walmart....I know they will be used....and they will have fun choosing what they want....

Good Luck...a lot of good ideas on here....

I like to give gift cards to young men......much better than trying to guess their tastes in music, movies, clothing, etc. I've recently given gift cards to a movie theater chain, a local casual restaurant, and stores like Target and Barnes and Noble which carry a wide variety of music, movies, books, and other items to suit a wide variety of interests. Those gifts were enthusiastically received. What young guy doesn't like to be treated to a movie, CD, beer and a burger, or other amusement of his choice?

I send sweaters from JC Penney to my grandkids with the receipts so they can exchange them; i choose plain colors in a cable knit.... they are around your price range.

One of the gifts I am giving this year to a lot of men, young and old, are gloves made for texting or using iPads, etc. They come with several fingers rubberized at the tips that make using electronic device easier while wearing gloves. I picked up some at TJMaxx and Marshalls by Isotoner but also saw them at Target (and online at Amazon). I bought them at TJmaxx and Marshall's for $16.99 but retail is about $40. The ones at Target were around $20.

Clark Howard says no to gift cards. Give him $25 cash! He will love it!

Yes, and you could put the cash in a money puzzle box from Amazon.

bad ideas: cd's, gift cards, dvd's, video games (b/c he's probably really picky)

good ideas: cash, subscription to Maxim magazine

does he use an ipod or have a touch screen phone? they make gloves now that have fingertips that can touch those screens :-) pretty cool! $15.99 at Target
