crossbody straps

Started 1375191212.48 in All About Handbags | Last reply 1379303806.157 by Desi

I only use a crossbody bag and my one complaint is that the straps are always stiff! If I have something draped across me then it should be soft. I saw the BM #A98168 hobo bag with a braided strap which looked great but it is never offered in crossbody style. Is it the price point or what? I would pay extra for that soft strap. I would even like to see a strap that is the focal point of a bag...solid body with patterned or coordinating contrast color maybe. Much like a scarf is an accent to a coat.

I agree. I refuse to buy any bag with that stiff strap. Many are made now with the short handles and an extra stiff long strap. I just pass those by even though I really like the bag.

I agree with both of you. I really prefer a crossbody bag because I love being hands free to shop. (even if it's groceries) My shoulder will ache if I have my handbag on it for hours at a time. The thickness and width of the strap does make a difference in the comfort of the bag. After being "fooled" by some handbags that were leather only to find out that the straps were not made sense to me that was part of my problem with the discomfort. (for me)

I have been searching for a new crossbody bag for a long time. Most of the ones that I've seen are either too expensive or the crossbody strap is too thin. A few of the hosts will now mention that even though the strap is there, the bag is really meant to be carried via the handles for the majority of time. My other problem has been that most of the crossbody bags have been tiny. I can see the need for this size but I also see the need for a medium size crossbody that holds a sufficient amount of "stuff". I don't want a bag that is the size of a weekender but a little more variety in size and price seems to be an endless quest.

Have you ladies tried Fossil handbags, the strap on most of these purses have more flexable crossbody straps. I have a couple of them and do like the crossbody straps. Good luck in your searches.

I have found that Travelon straps are generally comfortable to use in their crossbody or adjustable strap bags. Conversely Ebags brand bags which are crossbody have a strap which is thick and actually cuts into my neck, not comfortable at all. I've given them away.

Treat the straps with a leather conditioner to make them much more pliable and comfortable.

I got a Shariff wallet on a string from HSN and it came with a very nice soft chain for a shoulder strap. I have been carrying a Tig bag that had a stiff cross body strap I hated so i took it off and replaced it with the shoulder strap from the wallet. Much better. Last edited on 8/23/2013

My daughter loves Fossil crossbody handbags and most have a soft luggage fabric webbing that backs the leather strap. They wear like iron and aren't scratchy. I only wish that they made their straps removeable.

I own a few crossbody bags & none have stiff straps. I would not have bought them if the straps were anything but soft. I don't wear them crossbody though...

My complaint is the straps are not long enough. They should all have adjustable lengths.

I love crossbody purses for their functionality. However, I am looking into getting a backpack style purse.

I love my Coach Legacy leather duffle bag. It holds a lot and you can carry it on the shoulder or cross body. It converts easily and I carry it both ways. The strap is soft and thick but the bag is pricey.

It would be nice if they sold the cross body straps in leather seperate. That way you could add them to any bag.

Last year I went to a Danier outlet store (that is a Canadian leather clothing and handbag store) and they were selling black leather crossbody straps for $15 dollars each. They had silver hardware and were nicely made so I bought 3 of them. I put them on bags that didn't originally have a crossbody strap (like some east west bags) and it looks great.

I wish more handbag manufacturers would make a detachable crossbody strap in leather because I have a couple of handbags that did come with 2 detachable straps and I use the straps on other bags too. It makes the bags easier to wear when I want to be hands free like walking my dog or carrying shopping bags.

I agree. The straps are getting narrower and thinner (no padding) and they cut when the bags are stuffed. Also noticed all the corner-cutting, straps and pulls synthetic instead of leather. Some of the cross-body straps look like leather but I think they are synthetic. Short of seeing the exposed leather edge, is there a way to tell for sure? Like the ones where the edges are black and shiny, is that only synthetics (like men's belts) or do real leather ones also get that treatment?
