I am going to have a total knee replacement, how bad is the pain?

I am going to a new ortho doctor and I will need a total knee done. I am concerned about the amount of pain after surgery and how long do they keep you in the hospitial with this type of surgery? How long before I can go for a walk. I take care of someone with diabetes and I give the shots twice a day. I am very concerned about how long will it be before I can go home. Help please.
