I have very bad knees as well - I am having both replaced over this coming winter. I pretty much use my keds tennis shoes with my orthotic insoles in them which gives me the support I need and the orthotics keep me from getting a twisted ankle. For dress I hsve a few pair of sandals that are pretty good since when I'm dressed up I don't stand for long. GoodStuff1311373255.611357 PostsRegistered 11/11/2008 The best shoes I have are a couple of pairs of Easy Spirit lightweight sport oxfords which I wear with casual pants outfits........and a few pairs of nice, cushioned-sole flat sandals. Oddly enough, some of the best-wearing sandals I have are from Walmart! (I hate WalMart, but these shoes have been great). cherry1311383804.58316348 PostsRegistered 1/8/2005 Goodstuff I just got on to see if there was anything posted about bone cancer, my bil was recently diagnosed with it I saw this and thought I would share something I read or heard today on HSN..I was in their shoe section and was looking at Mary Jane's( earth shoes) and Born shoes...so it was either one of these brands ..A lady was scheduled for knee replacement and said after she started wearing these shoes, her knee felt so much better, she almost thought she didn't need the surgery I think it was an earth shoe..I just got a pr of this brand of Mary Janes, and they are so comfy, with a thick shock absorbant sole..They have some on clearance and ,it might be a solution for you..I have just started wearing mine a bit, but not a lot because of the heat, I am wearing sandals Good luck ,I hope this helps lillyville1311386009.52342 PostsRegistered 8/14/2009 I had a knee replacement in March, couldn't wait to get back into myshoes. Well due to swelling of my one foot due to the surgery I'm still not back into them. I wear mostly sneakers and I have a pair of Born slip ons that I wear. Dr. told me it could be a year or more till the swelling leaves. I do not have the knee pain, thank God. lillyville1311386010.057342 PostsRegistered 8/14/2009 I had a knee replacement in March, couldn't wait to get back into myshoes. Desi1311386915.09312212 PostsRegistered 6/9/2007Ma My knees are in similar shape, so i feel for you. I have been sticking with Birk's and Ryka, and as you know, even with those, I can feel my knees grind and shift. I passed The Walking Company shoe store in a mall. If you google, they have what looks like an amazing shoe line called ABEO. Unfortunately for me, the wides start at size 7. If they run the way they should, I am a 5 1/2 to 6. Shoes run so small these days, I mostly wear 6 1/2 to 7, mainly to get the width. Anyway, they are designed for people over 50 with bad knees. Sounds like just the ticket! If you get them, please let me know how you like them. He said that since they totally conform to the shape of the foot they give no support and are exactly the same as being barefoot. He said I had to throw them away unless I wanted to end up needing surgery on my other ankle as well. citymom1311436579.1645 PostsRegistered 1/31/2011So Cal. It was the best decision I ever made. You are where I was...YOU need you knees replaced NOW! It is hard work...but do it! Now, for shoes..flats, tennies, for dress try to find wedgies. Anything over 2 inches will be a problem for you. If you can find dress shoes under 2 inches wedgies...buy them. Good luck! Even firm sand, if it is slanted, isn't a good idea either. Many years ago, on weekends, I would walk on along the water's edge on a beach, and had knee pain the rest of the week. It took me years to figure it out. Ice (off and on) helped the swelling, as I recall. So I've given up on glamour for now. I'm recovering from my first knee replacement and my second will be in September. Right now, I mostly wear Crocs (not pretty, but stable, and very cushiony), and the Footsmart brand shoes that are all stretchy material (in their bunion area). My feet liked Birkies, but my knees eventually didn't, so they're out of the picture right now. Other than lace-up walking shoes, my other staple is a pair of Rockport very soft loafers, and a pair of Ryka Mary Janes. Except for the Rykas and the walking shoes, none of these are very supportive, but they are comfortable, and don't bother my knees. Good luck to you! I know how tough it is to make a decision about knee replacements, but it is well worth going through to be able to move without pain again. Sabatini21311443217.052143 PostsRegistered 11/13/2010 GoodStuff, I know you'll get a ton of suggestions, but I hope you'll choose to try this recommendation: Dansko, or Sanitas clogs/shoes. There are quite a few styles to choose from, & they'll never be considered s * e *x y, but you can walk or run all day long in them, & your knees & feet will thank you. I promise! Be sure that you ONLY choose those that are labeled "stapled", as they have the support you're looking for. I generally work 10-13 (or more) hours/day, & don't sit down for a moment. If I wear anything other than Dansko/Sanitas w/ stapled bottoms, I'll be crippled by the end of the day. They're life savers for me! I live in Birkenstocks in the summer, and wear Clark's clogs with the accordian heel, in the winter. Any other shoe means pain and suffering for me. If he doesn't, then he doesn't have much room to talk...surgeon or not. You do what you want, wear 4 in heels, I don't care. But I will do anything to protect those new darlings. Your just not in my place yet. I was fearful too...it was my first surgery in my life and mid-life. But it was either do the surgery or not walk. There was no choice. There are cute low heeled footwear in the market place. You'll see...but your not there yet, so how could you now? Beauty is ALWAYS before age...(Dorthy Parker misquoted intentionally)

Have had both knees done the last one a year ago now having terrible back problems which I've had before but its Clark's. My podiatrist said never to go barefoot in the house which I love to do so I bought Clark's slippers and they do help. I have very flat feet. Have tried Merrills and Mephisto 100 sandals and they killed my back and feet. Clark's has a newer sandal out with a very spongy bottom I really love. Ice (off and on) helped the swelling, as I recall. So sad, so true. When we visited the beach recently I had to enjoy it from afar. I enjoyed the pool, the sight and sound of the ocean, reading books under a palm tree on the deck overlooking the dunes -- but I couldn't enjoy walking on the sand. Just trying to make my way through the loose sand to the packed sand close to the water nearly killed my poor knees. Any kind of uneven terrain doesn't work well for me. GoodStuff1311476544.9611357 PostsRegistered 11/11/2008 Many thanks for all the good suggestions -- and commiseration -- and encouragement. I'm afraid to get my knees replaced; I've known people who have had the surgery and done very well........and others who have had a very bad time. I'm significantly overweight and lived with worsening knee pain for years now. I'm afraid of blood clots, afraid the surgery won't really fix the problems; afraid I'll end up worse off than I am. But I used to walk miles a day for exercise, and I so miss walking freely! I've worked as a medical assistant, as a concierge in a large senior facility, as a market research interviewer for a while -- all jobs that involved being on my feet for hours. My feet and knees are just trashed. And limited mobility isn't helping my overall fitness and well-being at all, although I do water exercise and swimming regularly. Bad knees are so limiting and make life hard. But I'm scared. Last edited on 7/23/2011 2000survivor1311479602.5371557 PostsRegistered 1/20/2008Arkansas Another vote for Dansko and Sanitas. If you watch Dillards they have great sales on Dansko. I have some beautiful black patent leather Dansko sandals, sort of a 1940's look to them. I also have a pair in a russet red. Quite by accident I found a line called Earth Origins. I was with a friend at Shoe Carnival she was looking at Easy Spirit. I bought four pair of the Earth Origins. They don't have a negative heel like Earth Shoes do. I have high arches, wide feet. From many years on my feet as a nurse and wearing beautiful heels off work I have problem feet. My Earth Origins are two pair loafers and two pair mules. All are 1 1/2 inch heel with superb support. Only problem is I have a hard time finding this brand. Planet Shoes online has a few if they have your size. I cannot wear Born, Clarks, Easy Spirit only there little travelers mule type sneaker. Part of my being hard to fit is the width of many shoes. I've been in some bad accidents and also tore the minicus in my knee and ta! TA! Don't forget all of the chub these poor knees are holding up. I do an exercise that strengthens the muscle that holds up the knee cap. Birkenstock are the only shoes I can walk in. I love shoes and that kills me. I keep ordering those weird shoes the Q started selling. So far I can't walk outside in them. gardenman1311516108.57313881 PostsRegistered 6/30/2005Southern New Jersey I had a knee replaced 17+ years ago and I wear Crocs all the time.
