WEN

Flaky scalp/buildup

Started 1348179305.59 in WEN | Last reply 1350482889.543 by Becky1979

Has anyone else had this problem? I've been using WEN religiously and exclusively for about 1 1/2 years now and LOVE it. I have been cleansing my hair about 2 or 3 times a week with POM using the cleanse, rinse, repeat method...but by about the the 2nd or 3rd day, I get this unsightly flaky buildup on my scalp, mostly in the front and crown area. I called WEN Cust. Serv and they said to make sure I'm rinsing it completely out. Not much help, since I rinse like CRAZY. I am almost 100% certain it isn't dandruff because my scalp isn't dry at all.

Any input on what to do? I really don't want to go the dandruff shampoo method, and I tried mixing in some Tea Tree with my POM and that doesn't seem to be helping...at least not yet after 2 weeks.

What happens if you use the Tea Tree straight? I started with WVM and loved it. I tried POM next since Chaz said it was the closest to the seasonals. No matter how much I rinsed my scalp itched like I hadn't gotten it all off. I almost stopped using Wen, but decided to use up the SAM I had which I had no trouble with. Now through more experiments I have realized for whatever reason POM is the only one I can not use on my scalp. Perhaps there is something exclusive to the POM formula that is irritating your scalp.

The Fall ginger pumpkin gave me flakes on my scalp and slightly red irritation on my scalp. I've never in my life had flakes so I chalk it up to something in that formula that I'm allergic to or just sensitive too. I'd try a different formula if I were you.

Try the TT by itself and see if you still get it. I'd be curious if it's just the POM that is causing this for you or if you get it with all the formulas.

I guess I will give TT a shot by its self. I will be kinda bummed if the POM is the culprit cuz I LOVE the formula! Thanks for the input

Are you using any styling products? Maybe you just need to cleanse regularly every day or every other day, at least until you can get this under control? It might help to switch out the formula too, like the other ladies have suggested. I know (for example) that I can never rinse the SAM out enough no matter how long I spend on it. Has this been happening since you started using WEN or is it a more recent development?

what styling products are you using (if any)?

You could always wash your scalp with TT and then your length in POM.

Becky and anyone else with this problem

Use a vinegar rinse once a week after cleansing. 3 parts water to 1 part apple cider vinegar.

Also, twice a week in your first cleanse of the scalp pour a little baking soda into your palm with your pumps of WEN. This will help to exfoliate any build up or those clogged follicles that other complain about.

I think you need to cleanse more often. I have seborrheic dermatitis. I use medicated shampoo every other cleanse. I use WEN my other days. With the condition I have, they recommend cleansing almost daily, as it washes away the flakes.

When you are sure you have rinsed enough- have 2 gallon bottles filled with water

Lean head back over tub or sink & work water through

Chances are- you'll see bubbles...

Finally there is a WEN- saavy girl working at my salon

I had my GGT with me....

She rinsed me with a strong stream for 15 minutes..

She loved the Gardenia scent- so I let her keep the bottle

Very helpful replies everyone...I'm trying just the TT for now and leaving out all other scents in the shower. So far, I think I'm seeing an improvement, but only time will tell. The vinegar rinse sounds like a good idea too. Christa, can I use just regular white vinegar, or do I have to use apple cider?

You can use regular white, but use the white only sparingly as it can be too strong (drying to your scalp). If you have white, use white. Next time you go to the store pick up some apple cider, its the same price really. You dont need a fancy brand, I picked up a gallon of it at the grocery for $2 and some change.

I don't use WEN, but had the same problem. My dermatologist prescribed a prescription shampoo that took care of the issue.

I have a very similar problem. It's almost like an adult version of cradle cap. I want to be clear though, I do NOT blame Wen for my condition. My scalp was sensitive to many brands of shampoo before I ever heard of Wen.

My co-worker recommended a shampoo that had success with, and it worked for me. Here is what I do... I use NIOXIN shampoo mainly on my scalp and then I use Wen (avoiding my scalp) as my conditioner. If I stop using the Nioxin for too long, the flakiness comes back. The Nioxin is VERY Pepperminty, so I assume that does something to exfoliate the buildup. There is a Nioxin conditioner, but it's truly awful.

Nioxin has a website which is nioxin.com. I have also found Nioxin at local hair salons, Ulta, Amazon and in Marshall's.

It's a tall white bottle with a dark gray cap. The exact description on the bottle is:

Nioxin cleanser

fine hair

1

Normal to Thin-Looking

I hope this helps!

I also recommend using the Tea Tree--use the Pomegranate on your ends only. And if you start to feel any buildup--add baking soda.

I had a similar problem so I put some vinegar in a small travel bottle and sprayed my scalp with it. But that did not seem to help. Using Tea Tree did.

I found I had this problem when I was being lazy on the scalp massage I usually use tea tree in the crown and the nape then my formula of choice on mid shaft to ends for the first cleanse at least once a week and if I ever notice im getting flakes I get a really nice froth going with the tea tree and massgae my scalp extremely well. I havent had any issues since using the tea tree in my routine =] Hope this helps!!

I did have that happen a couple of years ago, if i remember right it was when i was using POM. I actually got a little afraid of WEN and went to another shampoo. I have been using SAM and Tea Tree (mostly SAM because I bought a gallon) now and scrubbing and rinsing really well and haven't had the problem. But without trying POM again I can't be sure.

I think a couple shampoos with another brand might help or using Tea Tree might help. Either way I would use another forumla for awhile and see if POM isn't the culprit. The apple cider or white vinager sound like good suggestions too.

this is why I stopped using Wen , I just use it now as a conditioner after shampooing. I don't think the WEN really gets the scalp clean. Even though it makes your hair look nice

Pumpkin does the same thing to me, I just use the tea tree oil one every 2weeks and it helps. SAM doesn't do that to me all all...I used it solo all summer.

That's a really good idea. I think it's been better since eliminating POM, but maybe just shampooing a couple time then going back to TT would fix it once and for all. Thanks

Well, an update...had to just go to a dandruff shampoo once a week and that took care of it...but that meant I could go back to my precious Pom!

Becky, which shampoo did you use?

I had the same thing happen that you were describing. I did use other shampoos for dandruff, but they stopped working. I now have to use this shampoo a couple times a week to help with build up on my scalp. I'm not sure if it has stripped my color some. I wonder about that. http://www.justnaturalskincare.com/Psoriasis/hair-shampoo-psoriasis.html I think this is a good company and I have tried other products from them. They sell all natural products.

I've just been using a pyrithione zinc shampoo like Head and Shoulders.
