"out of area" phone call...

Started 1279200415.27 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1279227829.7 by CalmInTheHeart

I have been up for the day since 6am (it is now 9:30) and I have received 10...count them 10...phone calls that the caller id says 'out of area'. I don't answer the phone unless I recognize the number but this was really getting on my nerves so I answered it and all it did was beep in my ear. There was a beep then I could count to five then another beep and this just kept going on. I didn't stay on the phone too long because I didn't know what was possibly going on on the other end. I called my phone company (yeah right) and they said that without a phone number they couldn't do anything.

Has anyone else had this problem?

The beeps make me wonder if someone isn't trying to fax something and have the wrong number. I used to get calls in the middle of the night and was told that the beeping was from a fax machine. It was really frustrating because it was in the middle of the night waking me and I had no number to call and ask them to stop. It did stop after a few weeks but I really thought I was going to have to change my phone number.

Those types of calls (beeps) are typically from a fax machine/computer where someone has entered the wrong number and the fax machine/computer on their end is expecting to get beeps back telling it the other machine is connected and ready.

I was going to say what peppersmom did. That happens to us a lot at work because someone is trying to fax something to our telephone number instead of fax number. It may be they have it on automatic so it just keeps redialing to try again. Eventually the machine will stop redialing and the sender will get an error message but they may keep trying again without using their head and realizing they have a wrong number.

I'm pretty sure I know what phone company you are talking about and no, they can't do anything. We had a problem with a caller too and nothing could be done because we had no number.

I just switched to Comcast phone and I notice a lot of the calls that used to come in before with no number now have numbers attached to them on my caller id. My phone has a feature where I can put in a number to block - what happens is the phone will ring once and then that caller will get a busy signal. I had to do that to the Republicans...not that I don't like them, but 15 calls a day asking for money is too much.

Yes. I didn't have the beep though. I've had what I think are called "robo calls". Not a real person but a recording telling me "they" had a way for me to make $10,000 a month. Right. I'll get right on that. I've filed complaints with my State Attorney General's office but they told me there is nothing they can do. These people are very savvy when it comes to avoiding the authorities. I can't remember everything the letter I got said but I remember that even having a phone number won't help you. They hijack numbers or use throw away cell numbers to make the calls. I keep thinking that, if they used their "smarts" to do something legitimate, they might actually be able to do some good!

How aggravating! I agree, it appears that its a misdial from someone using a fax machine. Most fax machines will have an "auto redial" that redials the number for a set number of times until it connects on the other end.

In your case, you stopped the redials by answering. Otherwise, you're dependent on the sender noticing that the fax wasn't transmitting & double-checking the number.

Sorry, but the phone company wouldn't be able to do anything about that for you.

A fax machine on auto-dial.

Definitely a fax machine. Where I work, I am constantly receiving faxes. Often people confuse my phone # for my fax # so I receive these calls all the time. With the beep, it is definitely a fax. How aggrivating!

It is now 10am and I have now gotten 17 calls!! It's happening every 15 minutes!!!!

Okay, I finally got through to a 'person in charge' at my phone company and they said that what is going on is that it is a computerized phone call where a computer calls about 20 phone numbers at one time and who ever out of the 20 phone calls answers their phone 'first' they hear a recorded message...the other 19 people will hear the beep until 'their phone call is answered in the order it was picked up on'. The phone company person said that I could be on the phone all day 'waiting for my turn'. She also said this could go on for weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!! until who/what ever is calling decides to move on. The bigger problem now is if I don't answer it goes to my voice mail and uses it all up!!!!!!!

Is the phone company sure about that? I get those automated calls too but they either disconnect really quickly after I answer if someone answers before me or a recording will come on telling me to hold the line because they have an important message for me. It doesn't keep beeping and beeping and beeping like that.

This really stinks but you already know that! {#emotions_dlg.sad}

Do you have "Call Block" on your phone service?? You should be able to "Block Last Caller" if you do. Good luck.

She said it usually happens like this when it is a company not in the United States...they have had numerous complaints about this but without a number/area there is nothing they can do...when the called id has 'out of area' for the caller and phone number that it is usually, not always, a computerized call.

The call block with our telephone company only works if you have an actual telephone number. We can't block any other calls without a number.

I get those calls too. There is NO phone number when you check, so I can't put them on my "Blocked List."

The phone company lady could be correct, or somebody had erroneously typed your phone number into a fax machine. The fax will probably keep redialing since it couldn't connect to another fax on your end. If it's a fax, somebody will eventually figure out what happened and correct their mistake.

Ours beeps several times after an unsuccessful try, then sends out the failed page.

We have an automatic feature that continues to redial and redial until sent.

That is why we always double check the phone number {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

Oops, been there - done that.

At home I've been getting "out of area" or "unknown name" calls for years. I have never gotten more than 3-4 a day and sometimes I'll go days without getting one. I hope I never end up on whatever list you're on.
I have ATT U-verse and they have a feature that you can choose to block all calls where the caller doesn't provide a #. Since I've done that, I have probably only gotten maybe 5 calls in the last 8 months.

Yep. When I get a fax machine call its so loud it hurts my ear! The beeping has to be something else. It make sense to me that its some offshore scam. I'm sorry this is happening to you 14TonyStewartFan. It is a bear to deal with as I well know! {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown} I hope it ends soon.

We sometimes get the calls on our land line. We let our answering machine pick them up and there's never anyone on the other end. We rely on our cell phones for our main phone service. We have the land line for emergencies.

Can't you unplug your landline for a day or so, use only your cell, and e-mail your closest friends & family to call your cell? I couldn't listen to the incessant ringing.
