car seats, illegal to sell at yard sales?

My son has 2 boys, ages 4 & 6. Both are ready for an upgrade on their carseats.

Plus, they have 2 cars, so they'll need 4 carseats.

This can get pricey. My mother suggested they get them from yardsales because

she sees them all the time. My DIL said it's illegal to sell them at yardsales because the

safety requirements change so much. I would have thought she was right, but

when I looked on ebay, there are plenty.

Do you know of any laws on car seats?

I don't know if it is illegal, but everything I've ever read about it says not to buy used ones for two reasons:

1) You never know if they might have been in a wreck the there may be damage that isn't obvious that could compromise the integrity of the product.

2) It may not have the newest safety features or may have been recalled.

I think it's only illegal in CA.

I wonder if you could take a used one to the fire department and have them check. They are always saying they will put them in the car for you and install correctly. They might be able to recognize a damaged one.

I wouldn't buy a car seat at a yard sale. I understand they're not cheap - and I have 3 (my oldest still hasn't hit the max weight for her to be without one)! And, there are expiration dates on car seats. Around here you're not supposed to sell them at yard sales. Or children's clothes if you know they contain lead.

It's best to go out and buy new. They aren't that expensive at Walmart. If your son can't afford to buy 4 at this time then buy 2 and move them from car to car like we did.
