Cream cheese---how long is it good after the exp. date?

Started 1270319107.6 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1270342430.607 by PepperElfie

If it has not been opened?  Will it be moldy if it is bad or can it be spoiled but look and smell fine?  I have 3 pkg. with an exp. date of Feb.  I would like to use them in a recipe for tomorrow.  Any thoughts?

If it looked and smelled fine, I would think it would be okay.  But are you taking the dish to a party or something?  I might go buy some fresh to use in the dish that you will be serving to other people, and not take a chance with them.

Unless it's moldy or smells funny, it should be fine.  I've read it's good for months.

Quite a while. My Father worked for Kraft Foods for years. You can still use the cream cheese. I have eaten alot of expired cheese and NEVER got sick.

 I should be fine, but if you feel more comfortable you can get more.

Isn't the date for 'sell by'? Wrapped and refrigerated it should be fine.

I agree, that if it smells and looks OK it probably is.  I opened some sour cream last week, that was hiding in the back of the fridge.  It was marked Feb., never opened, so I used it on my sour cucumbers and it was fine.

Anyway how can you tell with sour cream....it smells sour????

There's probably a lot of preservatives in it, so if was only a month over the date and it smelled fine, I'd probably use it, provided it was in a dish that was going to be baked (like a cheesecake). If it was for a dish that's not 'cooked', then I'd buy fresh.

Cream cheese is good until you see the blue mold on it.

as long as it didnt have mold on it or smell bad, i would use it.

I'm pretty squeamish about such things, so you can take whatever I say with a grain of salt ;) but I'd probably be afraid to use it after the date unless I was keeping the package of cream cheese in Lock & Lock.  Ok, I have to admit - I probably still would be.  {#emotions_dlg.blushing}
