when I exhale I make a funny sound like a flute in my throat

this is getting very annoying. Would I have damaged my windpipe in some way in order to make these sounds? It's happening right now while I'm typing. I don't feel really congested but i make this sound everytime I breath out.

It sounds like congestion to me..You could be coming down with something..Once I had pneumonia and I did the same thing

It was just a mild case and i wasn't real sick....I hope you don't get any worse..I would call the Dr in the morning

Have you been ill?  Do you have any other symptoms?  How long has this been happening?  Have you had dramatic changes in the weather over the last couple of days?  Could it be the result of post nasal drip or allergies?

If you have a layer of thin mucus covering your windpipe, which is not smooth, movement of air over the mucus and windpipe ridges could be causing the noise.  Something like Sudafed or Benadryl might help if there are no other symptoms and no other health problems that would preclude taking either.  Hot tea with lemon may also help and avoid dairy like mild or ice cream which can make it worse.

I had a terrible cold last week, and although I'm feeling much better now, I'm doing the same thing.  I think it's because my windpipe is still a bit swollen and congested, and air is whistling its way through.  Technically I guess it's "wheezing", but I don't feel ill or badly congested any more.  This type of sound is more common is you're a bit overweight, as that sometimes creates loose fatty folds in the tissue along the interior of the windpipe and around the larynx.

Wheezing on the exhale is something that I always listened for in my daughter with asthma......not saying you have asthma, you might just have throat phlegm, but if feel as though you can't quite get all of the air out of your lungs when you exhale, you might need some bronchodialator medicine such as Ventolin.

I'm an RN.  What you describe is expiratory wheezing.  It is caused by a narrowing of your airway.  You might have an upper respiratory infection causing swelling.  If it continues, I would have it checked.

Sounds like asthma.  I have asthma, and when it acts up, I "whistle" too!

That sounds like an asthma symptom to me.

I had that last week.  I had bronchitis a few years ago and it happened for the first time.  Sounds like a faint orchestra warming up.  Dr said it's due to "asthma like syndrome"  Gave me Advair and that reduced the inflammation and airway constriction.  I sounded so funny when I lay in bed and exhale..  all squeaky. Seems like whenever I get a cold, it comes along with it.
