Fasting blood work question...

Started 1345643342.093 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1345774849.61 by Billie53

My doctor let me slide for quite a while but is now insisting I have blood work done, it has to be fasting. The reason it was able to slide for so long is that fasting is a bit of a problem for me...Food is not the problem, it is coffee. I have 2 special needs dogs that need meds in the morning - one before eating, one after eating they both need to be administered at the same time daily. It is difficult to do in the dark - meaning without my coffee LOL...only once in 3 years have I messed up the meds and that was because of no coffee.

So can I have at least a half a cup of black coffee before I go? This has been causing me a bit of anxiety and lack of sleep the past couple of weeks. And nooo I can't trust anyone else in my household to do it right for one day...

Yes, black coffee, meaning no cream or sugar is fine for this test. Have a cup! Enjoy:) If you're still uncertain, Google it. Better yet, call the lab and ask. Black coffee is ok on a fasting blood test.

Why not schedule your test for late in the afternoon, eat breakfast, then fast .

Thanks all, there is no scheduling you just go...but they don't open until 8:30 am. I am supposed to eat nothing after midnight...and could wait for hours to be taken. It is a stupid Lab afilliated with the doctor.

Fasting bloodwork generally means you cannot eat for 12 hours. My DH just had to have it done and was told NO coffee.

Fasting means no food or liquids - not even gum.

If you don't fast, the results will not be accurate.

My doctor's office told me I can have one cup of coffee (plain, no cream, no sugar) before my blood work. Of course, I can also have water. I don't eat after 10 PM. I just had it done this week. My appointment was for 8:30 but I didn't get in til 9:00 AM.

I agree you need to check with the doctor or lab.

My DH's was being done because he is diabetic. He was told it was a 12 hour fast and he was only allowed to drink water. Absolutely nothing else including gum, mints, etc.

This is usually the correct answer.

However, Dreamytoo, I understand your concern, but you should ask your doctor's office staff or the lab rather than relying on advice here.

The bottom line is that you want the blood test results to be useful, so it's important to follow their instructions without any variation. Otherwise, why have the tests?

We usually have it done the day we see our doc. and it's like 1pm in the day so he said we can have plain black coffee.

Yes coffee. No, No coffee. This isn't the place to ask your question. Call your doctor's office and ask one of the nurses for the information. {#emotions_dlg.scared}

Once a year I get a lipid profile that requires fasting. I schedule my appointment in the lab for first thing in the AM which means nothing after 8PM the night before. I get up and have my coffee. Hasn't hurt a thing...but it could be just me.

Funny, my mom had a doc appt last week, was not told to fast. She ate at 10 AM, appt was around noon, the tech took her blood and said it will be fine.

Some bloodwork requires fasting. Some doesn't.

I find it hard to believe you can't give your dogs medicine unless you have a cup of coffee, that sounds a little extreme. Just measure the medicine out the night before, leave yourself a note if you feel it is needed.

If you are that addicted to caffeine that you literally can't function then you have a big problem and should wean yourself off.

Hope you get good results on your tests. Go very early and be first in line.

Is there a valid reason why my post is no longer here? I was neither nasty or long winded.

Home grown terrorism is already here. Just ask the parents of Brendan Tevlin who was murdered in West Orange NJ on 06/25/2014. Where is the AG and the Justice Dept?

If I'm not mistaken, caffeine does affect certain organs and release of hormones, which could affect your tests, although I don't know how significantly. This is why you need to ask your MD. Maybe you could try to sip on a cup of hot water and it will give you a placebo effect. I'm serious. Maybe you could try this on a day prior to the test. That morning, you could also fill your sink with cold water and ice cubes and splash that on your face to wake you up.

I just had my annual physical and lab work. I had been dieting and watching my weight for several months...both to get my weight down so I would like nice and because I wanted good labs. I had to do the fasting for my labs, so I got up early and ran down to the hospital. Got there about 9:30, but it was about 10:00 before they called me in.

They drew my blood, and I ran to the cafeteria. After all those months of being good, I just really pigged out...onion rings, a chocolate covered bismarck with custard filling, and a big ole Classic coke! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Thanks again...I won't ask the Dr. or nurse because they are militant control freaks LOL. I need to look for a new Dr., only began seeing this one because it was convenient - I was there all the time with my parents.

It is not the need for caffeine so much as the messing up of my normal morning routine that makes this difficult. I have a natural order of doing things efficiently in the morning - without really thinking about it. Hence having messed up every morning I planned on going for the bloodwork - always forgetting and drinking the coffee.

I have made up my mind I will go tomorrow even if I drink some coffee...

I've had thousands of blood tests done and by choice go as early as possible in the morning. To be on the safe side I ingest nothing but a little H2o.

Some blood tests require being more rigid in what one consumes. Me personally? Regardless of the type of blood test being drawn, I drink nothing but water, and not much of it.

This is just what a have always done and will continue the same procedure next week once again.

I just asked my daughter, she is a phlebotomist, and she said generally one cup of black coffee would not change anything in your bloodwork that they are testing for. Your sugar, cholestorol, vitamin levels, etc., do not change because of a cup of black coffee. Just let your phlebotmist know before the blood work so they can notate it.

OP: I do not mean for this to be snarky, but I'm sure it will come off as such. You sound like the militant control freak who is unwilling to do a simple fast in order to obtain the most accurate results of a lab test.

Most, if not all doctors order labs at some point in a patient's care. Those labs often include fasting blood glucose tests and lipid panels. Both require fasting. My cousin was the head of a hospital lab. A 12 hour fast for lipid profile was the standard.

If you can't be compliant in a simple fast, why bother to have the tests done in the first place? What if the results indicate you have something going on? Will you follow protocol if you have to make any changes to your diet or lifestyle? You sound like the kind of patient who will do her own thing regardless of what anyone tells you to.

One morning isn't going to kill you or your dogs if your schedule is off! Just go & get it over with. And fasting means just that...nothing to eat or drink! And that certainly means NO coffee! Smile

My clinic doesn't want me eating or drinking anything, except water, before I go in.
