GPS 'attachment' to windshield

Started 1341796956.7 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1342471572.853 by MaryA

just back from a trip,,,4 year old Garmin doing well (never updated maps etc.) HOWEVER about every half hour the unit would plop from the windshield, grrrrrrr. Scares the heck out of me and also my dog. Does anyone have a 'helpful hint' of some kind,,any thoughts on those 'dashboard baggy things' vs. s u c t i o n cup??? I'd sure as heck appreciate any suggestions. I know when I clean windows,,,birds fly into them (my excuse for not cleaning often), and also suc tion cups on windows for decor (I use quite a bit) they don't stick as well when the window is CLEAN?!?!?!? any thoughts, please.

misspammie, the only time I had problems with mine was when the window and the suction cup needed cleaning. As soon as I would clean them both, the problem would go away.

Wish I had another answer for you!

I don't know if you could find one for your model (ours is really old), but we have a bean-bag type thing that just sits on the dashboard, and it has never fallen and doesn't even slide around at all.

Thank you "sleepy and ktlynam',,,,I will EVENTUALLY clean the windshield, but like I said, none of my s u c tion cups works right away in the house when I do that. As for the baggie thing, think I might try that,,,where and how do you do the wire stuff with that?? think I'll try it,,,I'm a master with Duct Tape!!!!!!! I have quite a few patterns, even a skull halloween kind!!! {#emotions_dlg.w00t} when it drops while driving, hope you never experience that,,,,,giant thunk/bleep and often lose the 'page',,,,,hard to handle when driving alone thank you both!!

We switched our Garmin to weighted bag thing and it's so worth it. When you stop somewhere it's easier to hide it ir put away. We had out truck windows broken out in Orlando and the first one stolen. It has never fallen or slipped off.

I notice my navigation system falls off in "severe" weather (i.e., when it is either really cold or really hot). I came out of a store last week and discovered it had fallen off the window when I was shopping.

Perhaps it has something to do with the difference in temperature between the air outside and inside? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

I used to have falling off issues with Garmin. Bought a new mount at Radio Shack (8 inches long with curve in middle, suction on 1 end, unit rests on dash). No more problems.

Smurf, pardon me, but DON'T leave it on your windshield,,,,people see it and would break in to get it, sad but true. Be careful.

Thanks for the concern, but I park overnight in my garage so no worries. I figure that navigation systems are so common place nowadays that a thief would have to be pretty desperate (plus, I have a car alarm so that is a good deterrent).

There's these rubber rectangle things for placing on your dashboard and then placing your cell phone on it -- supposedly, the cell phone doesn't fall off or slide around. I wonder if you could use that for your GPS.

I have an older GPS that the back of it sticks out and is tapered. The back of it wedges between the windshield and the dashboard so it doesn't fall off and I don't have to use that stick on the window thing.

Never heard of this, Maggie,,,sounds like you have a good set up.

I have one of those little bag thingies that attach to the A/C vent, that I put my iphone in so I can do hands free on calls, I think it works great, it would probably work well for your GPS too.................................raven

Well, duhhhh, my Garmin dashboard baggy thing came. Now can't figure how to attach it {#emotions_dlg.confused1}I see the plastic part on the baggie thing has a 'lock' way to slide it. must admit, in jammies and too embarassed to walk outside to the car and get the wire part thing that plugs into the cig lighter. Hopefully that'll make it obvious to see how to attach the gulldarnthing!!!! Hopefully I'll figure it out when I have all the parts here!!!! I'm just always afraid to force the plastic parts,,afraid they'll break. I'll let you know if I have any luck tomorrow. I sure am blonde today on this Friday 13th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Both DH and I use the circular bean bags. Window suction cups leave a telltale mark on the windshield and is obvious that you have a device. My driver window was smashed and my GPS was stolen - very upsetting, not to mention the inconvenience of repair. We put our GPS bean bag on the floor when we park so not to see that we have one. Also, beware it is bad to leave the GPS bake in the heat and sun while parked! It will cause it to malfunction or even ruin it!

Thank you, MaryA. Never liked those marks on the windshield screaming "THERE'S A GPS IN HERE". I don't leave it in the car either.....my son and I argue how the extreme temps could cause damage. So he does what he does and I do what I do,,,(he's mentioning his not functioning well lately, hmmmmm {#emotions_dlg.sneaky} ) will they ever listen???

So, where do you get your "Bean Bags?" Auto store? WalMart? Dollar Store?

I think Walmart has them, and Radio Shak was mentioned here. I got mine off Amazon,,also got a leather carrying case. (was using one of Joan River's black jewelry bags, perfect size!)

Yes, I think Walmart has them and you could also try Best Buy. My husband likes to get stuff from Amazon -> search on Amazon: "GPS bean bag dash mount" and scroll to the 13th one. That's the one we use.
