Whatever happened to Mary from "Little House on the Prairie"?

I have no idea what made me think of her or that show, as I haven't watched it in years, but I was just wondering if she ever went on to do more acting. I don't ever remember seeing her since that show was on all those years ago. Does anybody know?

Melissa Sue Anderson? I believe she retired from acting to raise her family.

I think I remember her in an earthquake movie.

I saw the gal who played Nellie Olson on a talk show last year, and she said that she and Melissa Gilbert are close friends. Also, that Melissa Sue was a real snob while they were growing up and didn't want much to do with either one of them. So Nellie and Melissa became close.

Nellie, I believe her real name is Allison, was discussing how her brother molested her when she was growing up. If I'm recalling correctly he had some deep mental psychological problems. She still looks the same but is heavier set and has really short hair.

I believe all of them have written books.

I didn't really become a fan of that show as it was so........ syrupy idealized when the books were more in keeping with the reality of life for that person. She (Laura) struggled and did for her family what her drunken bum father would not or could not do.

Melissa Sue went off and married the son of Frank Sinatra and then...........the marriage didn't last. As to what she's doing now? I haven't any interest. The other one Mellissa Gilbert was in the news a while back - getting divorced from her husband. Nothing new for the Hollywood crowd.

I found these pics of her and her family. Apparently they live in Canada. Anyone speak French?

I don't know about Laura Ingalls Wilder's real life, but I did read the entire series when I was a child, and again with my younger sisters. The television show was very much in keeping with the books, with the father being a strong, hardworking farmer.

The television series was nothing like the books, all of which I've read many times. Someone wrote a story about the Ingalls family, years later, and Laura left a lot out because she thought--rightly so--that was unsuitable for children.

Like the story of how, when they lived out in the middle of nowhere in the Little House on the Prairie in Kansas, there were some neighbors who had a habit of making visitors "disappear" AND they had a plot of land close to their house that was always freshly plowed. One day some of the local people came to call on Pa to discuss how to deal with the situation. They all took off for the afternoon; all were armed, and after that day the troublesome neighbors were never seen again. And...coincidentally...people stopped disappearing.

There's one more book, The First Four Years, about her marriage to Almanzo Wilder. It was unpublished before Laura's death and someone--possibly her daughter Rose Wilder Lane--who edited it and got it published, and it wasn't quite the saccharine tale her previous books were.]

BTW, was the OP asking about the actress who played Mary or Mary Ingalls herself? As far as I know, she never married but lived with her family for the rest of her life. Charles Ingalls died at the relatively young age of 65 but when you consider the hard, physical work he did all his life, maybe it's surprising he lived as long as he did. I think Caroline Ingalls lived another 20 years or so after he died.

ETA: I just re-read Sue's OP and see she WAS asking about the actress. My bad...but informative, I hope.

One thing a lot of people forget is that the Little House books were novels, not an autobiography of the author.

Laura changed, added, subtracted, and rearranged a few things--such as the fact that Pa gave Jack the dog to the man he traded his horses for mustangs for. I think Carrie may have been born in Indian Territory; things like that.

Ms. Lorraine, I enjoyed reading your post. You've inspired me to read more about the real Laura and her family.

I loved the Little House books, and read them many times. The TV show was very off-base: I found it unwatchable.

Where did you read Laura Ingalls Wilder's father was a drunken bum? I consider myself pretty much an expert in her life, as I highly admire Laura, but Charles Ingalls was NOT a drunken bum!

The French translation is that she lives in Montreal now and it talks about her Italian lover, I believe.

There is no legitimate source, of anyone who has researched the INgalls family, that says Charles was an alcoholic. Why? Because it's simply not true.

I agree with you JBUGG, I haven't seen any source either.

In wikipedia, it says that she dated Frank Sinatra, Jr., but that it never went anywhere.

I too read all of the Little House books numerous times; I also read several biographies, and I never got the impression that the father was an alcoholic. If anything, he may have been a bit of a wanderer, always wanting to go to the next new territory; he also had some bad luck with crops at times, so money was tight. But negligent in any way? Never.

I know Melissa Anderson had a part in at least on Murder She Wrote episode. She played a starlet, and she turned out to be the killer.
