Was anyone watching the retrial of Jason Young? SPOILER

Started 1330984806.783 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1331229591.453 by Marp

Weird, a spoiler on the verdict, but just to be safe.

Anyway. Convicted 1st degree for the murder of his pregnant wife. Immediate sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

Totally circumstantial case, but the jury was able to put the pieces together.

This guy must not have been watching any detective shows.

When you kill your spouse, do NOT call someone to go and check in on them.

Oh, and also do NOT be mean to store clerks, they tend to remember you FOREVER.

I remember one lady who killed her husband and set fire to their hotel room. The clerk remembered her so well because the clerk asked her what color she used on her hair and the lady got IRATE because it was "natural"

The judge said that this "man" was so out of control that the evidence indicated that he just beat her and beat her until he got tired. And he said this was a domestic violence case. In front of their daughter.

Young showed no notable reaction, except the veins in his forehead.

98% of cases are circumstantial. You need an eye witness or a video of the crime for it not to be. How many cases have that? Not many.

Thank goodness, as IMHO he was guilty as sin. After Casey, anything could happen so I am never convinced of the outcome while watching the trial.

I'm glad the jury came back with a guilty verdict. I didn't watch the trial but did see exerpts on HLN.

It's bad enough to beat your pregnant wife to death, but to do it in front of your child, well, words cannot express my disgust.

I watched a lot of it on NG and all the circumstantial evidence leaned toward a conviction

I am still shocked the judge threw out the case of the scuba diver accused of killing his wife on his honeymoon, The judge should have at least let it go to the jury and let them decide

The SOB got married to his mistress a few months after the wifes death. Imagine that.

I am very pleased that the jury came back with the guilty verdict. The motive, the botched alibi, the cash station attendent, the wedding and engagement rings being remove (and prior experiences with him taking the rings of other women) no robbery except the rings off her body, the dissatisfaction with marriage....

Finally justice. This jury should have been on the CA trial.

I was so happy that they found him guilty, because I definitely think he is. I also got the feeling that his mother was lying on the stand when I saw clips of her. Of course, I don't know this for sure, but I definitely felt she was lying for him.

Just heard on local news that an investigation into juror misconduct during deliberations has been started. News said they did not know how it might impact the trial or verdict.

I just read it on CNN. The judge asked for the investigation because someone alerted him to a Facebook post about their hairdresser having a friend on the jury and getting texts about the deliberations. According to the article, if true, it would still have to be proven that this impacted the verdict.

Apparently the judge learned that one (?) juror may have talked about the case during deliberations. Think one or more jurors were already dismissed for something similar.

Found a link to a news story

Reading the entire story may come to nothing even if the allegations are true unless there were back and forth communications. That could be a problem especially if an outsider said something that could be perceived as trying to influence the subject juror's vote.

I did DVR In Session for this trial and watched just enough of it to draw my own conclusion. I felt there were just to many coincidences for him not have killed his wife and viable fetus. That along with cleaning up the child/clothes he was seen wearing on video cameras missing/not talking with law enforcement for what, 5 years? Then there is giving up his child to avoid giving a "deposition"?

Common sense told me I doubt someone who wanted to just rob this place would bang this fine lady 30 times in the head and face and take time out of his robbery after spending half hour making sure the victim was dead? And then take another half hour or so cleaning a child?

Common Sense for someone intent on home robbery? Not to me regardless of the forensics or lack of it.

IMO he deserved what he got and he got what he deserved. Also shows yet another trial that can be won with nothing but "Circumstantial Evidence", as it was in the Stewart case where the husband had a "look alike?" as part of his alibi? That one didn't work and neither did this one for yet "another excuse for a man", Jason Young.

Good riddance to society.

I did not watch the trial- but I did follow the story on the news. I believe he is guilty, and Im glad he got convicted. Also, most cases are circumstantial. (we all watch too much tv and just think they always have a pile of actual evidence to convict, but thats not always true in real life).

And now a jury member may have been texting the voting while deliberating? Could anyone be that stupid? I hope this doesn't open up the prison door for this Young guy to get an appeal or another trial.

They call in "Social Media", and some people are so moronic they think for some reason using this excludes them?

Disgusting.

Latest investigation update:

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- One day after concerns about social media postings over the Jason Young jury deliberation, more information has been released about what the SBI will be looking for in its investigation.

Officials say this investigation could take a few days or even weeks. It depends on what the SBI finds out early on.

That investigation could lead to yet another trial for Young, the man tried twice and found guilty of murdering his pregnant wife.

Right now, another trial seems a remote possibility especially if the SBI tracks down the sources of the online comments about jurors and they confess it was all made up.

However, if investigators find that a juror did communicate with the outside world, that juror could be prosecuted for contempt.

That finding would spur more investigation to see if there was any communication back into the jury room from the outside world. If so, that could be grounds for a mistral.

Former prosecutor and long-time defense attorney Karl Knudsen has researched the law and followed the case.

"Given the emotional toll, the financial drain to everybody, the thousands of hours, and probably, at this point, something point something million dollars of public funds expended to try to bring resolution to this, to somehow lose it because somebody didn't follow the rules would just be terrible," said Knudsen.

The foreperson of the young jury told ABC11 that she believes the information in the posts that brought on the investigation was likely fabricated.

There's not just one incident under investigation. There was also another posting on the same website in which a woman claims a juror she saw in public talked about the case but claimed he was unbiased.

Additionally Marp...I was listening to the jurors that spoke out after the verdict--BEFORE the supposed facebook and text message info was "released" and the info the jurors spoke of regarding the various vote counts and progression in the jury room do not match the "info" in the fb or texts. According to the jurors (remember they said this before the leak story came out) was never what the fb posts said they were.

That means, to me, that is likely this is a made up story.

Marianne,

I hope it is made up. According to local news reports the State has already spent millions on this case. If he had to be tried again it is a shame that the offending juror(s) couldn't be made to pay some of the costs.
