My dog lost a nail?

Started 1314583775.39 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1314619467.547 by AnikaBrodie

I found it on the floor....it looks like the "shell" of a nail like my cat loses periodically. She is a 7 year old Golden Retreiver.

Is this OK or is a trip to the Vet in order? Thanks

As long as she isn't bleeding she might not need to go..Just keep it clean

I agree with cherry.......It does happen now and then.....Mine had that happen last year, she was fine.

I have found this once in a great while myself. Check the paws and you will probably find where it came from. If there is flowing/dripping blood, then yes it will mean a trip to the vet unless you keep the stiptic (sp???) powder at home.

When this has happened it usually meant the nails were too long and needed to be clipped. With my dogs that would mean a trip to the vet anyway. I have the stuff but I'd much rather pay the $10 to have the vet tech do it.

I looked at each nail with a flashlight and they all look normal?? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

One of my dogs would bite her nails if she felt they were too long and I would find them sometimes..My husband always kept them clipped but this little lady was very particular

Years ago my german shepard lost her nail. I took her to the Vet.

The Vet told me she was in pain even though she didn't act like it. Dogs are that way. They need to appear to be strong at all times. To be in pain shows a weakness.

The Vet gave her a pain shot and gave me something to give her for several days.

Yes, same with my Rottie. He also warned me that the bleeding could be dangerous if it didn't stop.

Check all her nails and ensure the broken nail is clean and dry. You may want to dremel (we don't clip our dog's nails) the nail to smooth any rough edges. You could try wrapping it for a few days but most likely she would remove the wrapping. If she appears to be in pain call the vet.
