We have an abundance of tomatoes this season and I have been eating them every which way . I have had no adverse reactions yet but I was just wondering....

I LOVE tomatoes, but too many make sores on my tongue & cheeks.

the only thing is that you may get too much citric acid - from that sometimes your mouth will burn- or you may get canker sores, or even itchy skin. Nothing harmful.

There are a great source of vitamin C and potassium, but are highly acidic. I get heartburn from too much tomato in foods.

Well, I will die soon. I have eaten a tomato and slice of cantaloupe for lunch the last week or so -

Just ate said dish at noon, as a matter of fact. LOVE fresh veggies and fruit. Smile

ETA, Did you know that a whole medium tomato and a 1/8 wedge of cantaloupe have the exact number of calories as a regular Oreo cookie? {#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

Be careful, you might turn into a tomato.

If you have arthritis you might need to stay away from the Night Shade vegetables which tomatoes are among that group. Otherwise enjoy all the tomatoes you want.

If tomatoes bothered you believe me you would know it. They could give you anything from hives to gawd awful stomach inflamation and then some. If they like you you're lucky!

I don't know about tomatoes, but the farmer selling his homegrown carrots at the farmers market, who raved about how marvelously they tasted in the carrot&onion stirfry he ate daily, sure did have a distinctly orange cast to his skin!!

When I have eaten too many tomatoes (they are in season right now in NJ and they are the BEST) day after day, meal after meal, I will develop sores in the corners of my lips.

I'd always heard that raw tomatoes are alkaline, but cooked tomatoes become acidic, so I am not sure the sores are an acid problem. Probably by the end of August I will have the sores in the corners of my lips.

I don't think you will turn orange like when you eat too many carrrots.

I am a believer that one can eat too much of anything, We have a hospital here for those who are actually trying to drown themselves by drinking unbelieveable amounts of water.

I learned my lesson YEARS ago.....canker sores HURT and I got them from an overabundance of summer tomatoes. Moderate that now...and all is well.

This time of year I eat 2 or 3 tomatoes every day - they're just about irresistible! I either just slice and eat or make lettuce and tomato sandwiches. Never noticed any ill effects from it. I also eat lots of cantaloupe and blueberries. Tons of good nutrients in all these - summer is by far the easiest time of year to diet.

oh, sure you can! Though I can't imagine how MANY you'd have to eat, but it starts with discoloration of the whites of your eyes.

I didn't read the thread, so maybe no one has mentioned that the tomato is a relative of belladonna?

I love them, and eat them a lot, but huge amounts everyday might be too much of a good thing. A dear friend warned me about that once: he saw I had brought 2 tomatoes to work for lunch.

Things like lots of carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, etc can turn your skin "yellow", usually starting with your palms. It DOES NOT effect the whites of your eyes.. that's jaundice which has nothing to do with food consumption. The carotenoids in these veggies also makes you less prone to sun damage, as does green leafy veggies. If you reduce the consumption you skin will return to normal. It is not harmful.

Yeah, too much acid, but they are so good. Last time a neighbor gifted me with a bag of tomatoes I ended up blanching, peeling, freezing, and vacuum sealing them. Still in the freezer awaiting the next time I'm making spaghetti sauce or lasagne.

I have a sometimes severe case of GERD, so I have to be particularly careful with acidic foods but if you don't have a problem like that you are probably fine. Plus, it's seasonal so it's not like you are eating them every day 12 months a year. It's quite surprising some of the foods that are high in acidic content (many not as obvious as tomatoes).

Eating too many tomatoes can cause gout flare-ups. I am going to have to freeze some soon, as I also have way too many.

By GEORGE, we will find our way back home.

Years ago, when I was young (and not so smart), a few of my friends and I were on a "carrot kick". During an exam, my doc noticed that the palms of my hands were orange. He said: "Before I run many expensive tests and liver tests, have you been eating a lot of carrots?" (Smart doc). Anyway, he said to cut out eating them, and so I did, and in approx. one year my hands returned to practically normal.
