Need help removing an "old" people smell from a home I just purchased

Cleaned the carpets with a carpet cleaner

Cleaned the walls with Mr. Clean

Such a strong smell is still there

Any ideas? I am thinking I need to rip out the carpets

My, my, what a stereotypical generalization. My great grandmother smelled like lavendar and roses and her home smelled like cinnamon rolls and apple pie.

I wish my home had her "old people" smell.

I guess I don't know the particular smell either? {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Vinegar has always been a good odor neutralizer. And just opening all the windows to air it out.

Replacing the carpet sounds like a good idea if you think that is the problem. If it's an older carpet anyway, there maybe no way to get it to smell fresh.

{#emotions_dlg.crying}

{#emotions_dlg.biggrin} To the OP, I am not making fun. I think you might be referring to a person who was ill perhaps, regardless of age. Did they have pets indoors? Did they smoke? There are services that come and clean after a fire or something like that, perhaps they could help. They are not very expensive.

OP I'd just rip up the carpets...the "old people" smell might just be from cats or dogs. Old people don't smell...none that I know of anyway.

What you're smelling is old carpet and padding. Take it up and throw it away and paint the walls with kilz brand paint.

Well, I live alone, I'm 63 and I smell very nice thank you. I showered today with philosophy's Amazing Grace...I didn't know old people had a "smell". I worked in a very nice nursing home and our patients had no offending smell. The nursing assistants cleaned our patients well and kept them that way.

It may be mildew in the drywall which is very dangerous.

You might want to get a professional to try to find out what the cause is.

Maybe sprinkle baking soda into the carpet to absorb odors, then vacuum it up if you want to try and save the carpet. Or get it cleaned professionally.

Charcoal is supposed to absorb odors, too, I think there is some kind of product you can buy specifically for that but I'm not sure what it's called.

Google "odor absorber"

I object to your description of old people as well. That said, you can get rid of most odors by completely repainting the walls and replacing carpeting and floors.

The worst smelling house I ever bought was owned by a young couple with two kids and several cats who used the floors and carpeting as their litter box. We had to rip out all of the carpets, and the kitchen and bathroom floors, and completely disinfect the slab before we could replace all of the floors and move in. The house was absolutely filthy and disgusting. The only reason we bought it was because it was all we could afford and I could visualize it once we completely renovated it. It wound up being a lovely house that sold for twice the amount we paid for it. Over the years we added a sun room and a deck. We had buyers fighting over it.

You will just have to spend some money to get rid of the smell you object to.

Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
