Do you tip at the car wash?

Started 1301338744.33 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1301491349.253 by angel27417

Yesterday here was sunny but cold - below freezing with snow on the ground.

I went at noon to get my car washed, the lines were too long...backed on to the street.

When I tried again at 5, I still had to wait half an hour. When I got up to the girl who dries the cars off, her towels were wet and her hands looked raw in the cold. She had to go around the car twice to dry it off.

I tipped her $5, something I have never done before. She said she was freezing and worked an overtime shift because of the traffic. I told her she was a hard worker and deserved something extra...it was REALLY hard work!

Do you ever tip the car wash people?

yes, the guys in the back who do the vacuuming, and the guys in the front who do the drying, tires inside cleaning etc. i have an suv, so it takes at least 25 min. i never really thought of it, i thought everybody tipped at the car wash.

Where I go now, there is a box for tips . I guess they divide them up at the end of the day. I'm not crazy about that type of thing, I would rather tip the person who actually does the work.

We have those automatic car washes around me . I think that was a very nice thing of you to do. I would do the same thing if I felt someone has gone above and beyond .

Around here the customer has to get out of the car and go into the waiting area where there are tip jars.

There are also fully automatic washes with basically no human contact.

This is an automatic car wash with people who dry your vehicle at the end.

They are always very hard working young people. The company has them dress in uniforms, it is very well run and employs a LOT of city youth.

For some crazy reason, I never thought to tip before...probably because when you lower the window, it gets all wet and streaked (she wiped it again, of course!)

do you sit in the car as it goes through? here, you have to get out, and it goes in by itself where some people do the initial washing until it gets to the soap station, and then they jump in at the end and drive it out.

never been to a car wash that has people. usually just buy one after I get gas, you just drive in, it pulls you through to the other side. my dogs are terrified of it.

Yes, you sit in the car as it goes thru. There are people at the beginning who hose it down and people at the end who dry it.

My dog LOVES to go thru and see all the flashing lights.

No, the only thing humans do at ours, is guide you onto the tracks.

No - all they do is put a piece of tape over my windshield wiper, take my money and push a button.

Either wash our cars myself at home or go through a wash where I do it myself. On the rare occasion when I use the "touch-less wash"? Ain't nobody there to tip but the machine, and ain't no ways I'm doing that.

Yes, I do tip them. There's a tip box at the end of the wash area......They guide the cars onto the tracks, and when it's finished washing they guide it off and then a few workers vacuum the floors and seats, spray and clean the windows, spray and clean the dashboard, the inside of the doors, the cup holder and compartment areas, etc. They also dry off any excess water left on the outside of the car.

They do a good job and they have to split the tips, so it's no biggie to me to leave an extra few dollars for them.

You are such a good friend that if both of us were on a sinking ship and there was only one life jacket......I'd miss you heaps and think of you often.

Always. And I'm generous, as was my late DH. We both tend to overtip for this.

At the car wash? Sure, I tip.

The one I use has changed owners several times, but the workers have been there a long time and know me. That is hard work--in FL, the sun is broiling hot for most of the year. They do a very good job.
