I have bad shingles and it hurts so bad

Started 1301063076.77 in Viewpoints | Last reply 1301149608.82 by peace-on-earth

I am going to a clinic today to get nerve blocks done to prevent nerve damage. I have RSD and it makes it more complicated. I am currently out of work for something else but my doctor said she would have pulled me out for a month anyway. I really wanted to go back to work soon. But the pain is so bad and the lesions are on the side of my neck, on my ear and the skin behind my ear all on the left side. They are so big and it scares me. I live by myself and I know I can spread the chickenpox to someone who has not had it so I will stay away from people until I am not contagious.

I am 47 years old a little young to get shingles. It kind of worries me if I have something else going on with me to make my immune system so weak. I will get a full physical when I am all healed to see if all is ok. Wish me luck today getting the nerve block.

I am so sorry you are not well. My sister had shingles at a young age ( teens) so I do not think it has anything to do with age. Those who had measles are prone to shingles. Make sure you get a vaccine so you do not get a relapse.

Hope you get better soon!

Who said you're too young for shingles?

I was 17 y/o and a Senior in HS.

I took Aclivor (sp?) an anti virul drug on 3 different occasions in the fall when I had shingles. Shingles does not discriminate on age...I thought I was too young. I got the shingles vaccine as soon as I could after my flare ups. It is a miracle vaccine! Insurance won't pay probably since you are under 60. But it's worth every penny! Good Luck and get well soon.

I had it when I was in my 30's and took the meds twice and got rid of them finally. They never came back, but I do have Lymes and Fibro now so who knows.

Oh I guess you can get Shingles at any age I thought it usually comes with people 60 years or older. Mine are so bad that meds will not work at this point and I need nerve blocks. I hope it does not hurt because I am so sick of being in pain having RSD now known as CRPS.

47 is NOT too young to contract shingles. I got it when I was 30!! Just a light case but just the same I was only 30!!!!

I feel your pain. I had my first outbreak all over my back in early February and for 2.5 weeks I was in excruitiating pain even with meds. My back is finally healed but terribly scarred.

The pain is worse than child birth. And I did give chicken pox to my two month old grandson. He only had a mild case though. But the guilt still is with me.

You're not too young for shingles. I had shingles when I was about 11 years old. I had chicken pox when I was about 8 years old.

As others said, you can get shingles at any age. They are just more common in people over 60 and the protection from the vaccine wears off. That is why it is recommended for people over 60.

A lot of people here who have had shingles highly recommend lidocaine patches. They found good pain relief with those; better than with oral pain medications in some cases. I would ask your doctor about getting these.

I hope you feel better soon.

I had shingles in my early 20s...

It was awful and I remember taking codeine for the pain.

Hope you feel better soon!

My daughter had shingles when she was nine, after having chicken pox when she was five. We were waiting for the doctor, and on the back of the door was a poster about shingles. I kept looking at it, then looking at my daughter, and just thinking, "No Way". Sure enough the doctor walked in, took one look at the small rash on her back, and said, "She's got shingles". He was pretty surprised, but said he had seen another case just the week before.

Lucky for my daughter, it was not painful. Left a scar about the size of a fifty cent piece. I just hope it never comes back to give her problems in the future.

I don't think shingles has anything to do with age either.

They are not from having the measles, they are from chickenpox.

You can't get the shingles vaccine until you are over 60 years old.

Other than a painful rash, are there other symptoms of Shingles?

Before I had the rash, I had some muscle pain in my side. My dr. said it was a pulled muscle and next day I got the rash. I felt like I had a bad case of the flu for about a week. I stayed in bed a lot. But the rash is the worst thing. Mine was around my waist.

It's too late for SWout to get the vaccine. Once you have had shingles you can get a recurrence of post herpetic pain. DH had it a year ago and the doctor told us that I am the one who needed the vaccine now. I did get it and insurance did pay for it. It took a few months for him to get over the severe pain. He now occasionally takes Lyrica if the pain gets intolerable. He originally had been on Acyclovir. My heart goes out to anyone who has had shingles.

I'm sorry for you! My sister had shingles as a teen, and it was horrible. I remember her crying all night long from the pain, and she is a pretty stoic person, so I knew it had to be bad.

I'm hoping for a fast relief and recovery for you!

Thanks for the info. It sure sounds horrible. I don't understand why the vaccine is so expensive. I'm sure it's worth it, though.

My heart goes out to you;I have heard it is excruciating. Please be sure to get pain meds if the block is not fully effective. Many do not realize this but you need to break the pain cycle by getting to it before nothing helps-your doc will explain. Being brave does not cut it with severe pain. Good luck!

I had them twice by the time I was 25. Yuck. Hope you feel much better soon, and I'll say a prayer that they don't spread and the nerve blocks work!! Both times I attribute to stress. Freshman year of college, and shortly after starting my career right out of grad school. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy, but I was blessed to catch them early both times, and got on oral and topical acyclovir. Worked wonders but still takes quite a while to heal. Hope you feel better soon, hun!!

Well I had shingles before I was 60 and as soon as I turned 60 I went to the doctors and got the vaccine. I didn't care whether my Insurance would cover it because I knew what awful pain I had and didn't want to take a chance on going through that again and I was told that the vaccine wouldn't guarantee that I wouldn't get them again but not as bad maybe. My Insurance did cover it and that was good because it's very expensive. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

Boomerjo - I too got the injection and was 56 at the time. However, DH has a compromised immune system as he is a kidney recipient and takes anti rejection drugs. I am sure he said that once you have had shingles, the vaccine will be of no good.
