I just bought some Dannon Greek Yogurt in vanilla flavor. It was more expensive than regular yogurt............I like it!Smile

I just wondered what the benefits were versus regular yogurt? What makes it "Greek"??

Google! It's a great reference tool.

i think Dannon came out with their own Greek yogurt because of the popularity of Chobani Greek Yogurt. I am looking up their website right now for you.chobani.com.

My daughter has two little girls and swears by Chobani yogurt and believe me, little girls can be very very picky. I have tried it and love it. Here is what they say on their website:

All natural. No preservatives. No artificial flavors.
· No synthetic growth hormones: No rBST-treated milk.
· Includes 5 live & active cultures, including 3 probiotics.
· Made with real fruit.
· Twice the protein of regular yogurts.
· A good source of bone-building calcium.
· Gluten-Free and Kosher-Certified.
· Safe for people with corn, nut and soy allergies.

you can sign up for their newsletter and offers and also go to where to buy

well, somehow Dannon and Greek yogurt just doesn't seem to be really Greek yogurt (jmho).

I buy Chobani (some people love Fage, but I prefer Chobani)

It is more thick & creamy than regular yogurts - it doesn't have that dreaded whey (that watery stuff) on the top of it when you open it, because they allow that to filter out.

Benefits - it is higher in protein and lower in carbs & sodium - plus it is thick, creamy and tastes REALLY GOOD!

Greek yogurt has more protein..I know the Yoplait Greek Yogurt boasts it has 2x the protein of regular yogurt. I've tried Chobani, Yoplait, and I just bought Fage yesterday but haven't eaten it yet. You still have to be careful with sugar content though if you are at all concerned about watching your sugar and carbs. Plain greek yogurt is pretty low in carbs/sugar. Add fruit and it goes up pretty high. I really like Stoneyfield Farm Yogurt..Banilla is delicious. But 1 cup has 35 grams of sugar. I may as well have ice cream if I'm going to indulge in that.

Thanks girls!Smile

I only bought 2 of the vanilla flavor---just in case I didn't like it. I like the fact that it's thick and not as sugary sweet as regular yogurt. I think it would taste good to add some fruit and granola.

yes, it does! I buy plain now and I mix in my own fruit and some nuts - I happen to like the tart flavor - it doesn't bother me at all.

Don't forget that "milk sugar" (lactose or lactase) has to be counted as part of sugar grams, so that even if the yoghurt is plain and unflavored it will list sugar on the label.

Milk sugar is not metabolized in the same way as other sugars are though, so they shouldn't necessarily be considered fattening.

It also makes a great substitute for sour cream in most recipes. I made some banana bread a couple of weeks ago - had everything going and realized I had no sour cream so I used a container of vanilla Greek yogurt instead (of course, plain is better is most recipes) - DH remarked that there was something different about the bread and it was much better than usual. I'll be using the yogurt from now on. Healthier, too.

I always add raspberries or blueberries to vanilla flavor. Love it. Great protein source.

I got it on sale for .89 cents for 5.3 ozs. That seemed like a good price.

Some of the other brands of Greek yogurt were around $1.89 each....

I like Chiobani but prefer Fage - I buy plain fat free and add my own fruits, nuts, granola etc. I also use it as a substitute for sour cream on tacos, potatoes and in soups. Have even served it as sour cream to guests and no one has noticed it - I just don't say anything.

I love to top oatmeal with it as well. I would find it difficult to go back to what most of us think of as yogurt.{#emotions_dlg.bored} I believe it is so much better for you - I hope you find you really like it.

For afternoon energy around 3-4 pm my energy level lowers. I learned year ago to have one teaspoons of honey, so I stir it into my greek yogurt. My afternoon snack.

I'm going to look for the Chobani brand. I eat yogurt almost everyday and now that I know I like the Greek, that's what I will buy.

I've bought Stoneyfield in the past in the chocolate flavor----I loved it! I'm not even going to mention how many sugar grams it had.{#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

I have been buying the fage. What is the difference in taste between that and the Chobani?

plain - not that much

I happen to like the flavors that Chobani has over Fage.

it doesnt have to be greek to be good. i make my own and i can control what goes into it. this way it is the freshest it can be. make sure it does have probiotics and live acidophilus cultures to get as many benefits as possible.

I have a 32 oz. container of Chobani Greek plain non-fat yogurt in my refrigerator right now.

An 8 oz serving is only 9 grams sugar, and 23 grams protein!

I usually have about 1/3 to 1/2 cup as a topping for oatmeal then sprinkle with chopped toasted walnuts or almonds. I also add a scoop of ground flax seed meal to the cereal and stir it in before topping with the Greek yogurt and walnuts.

I carefully watch sugar grams, and this fits so well in my food plan, and it is delicious!

Then you can drain it and it's Greek Yogurt.

Hi, buyornot,

I buy Fage sometimes too... or Voskos Greek Yogurt, or Chobani. I love them all. I buy the brand that is the least expensive at the time. Whichever brand I buy, it is always plain Greek yogurt, no fruit or flavors added.
