Why Does My Dog Do This?

Started 1277737521.167 in Pet Lovers | Last reply 1277889746.9 by snocool

I have a Golden Retriever almost 3 yrs old named Jake. He is the love of my life and he's with me all day. Whenever he goes outside after awhile he will sit on the lounge chair on the deck in the sun!! It could be hot as h--- out there and he still does this. Well like a good mommy I moved the chair into the shaded area under the awning and you know what? He went an laid down on the deck in the sun{#emotions_dlg.mad} Of course I take him back into the house because I don't want him to get overheated. Anyone else's dog do this. None of my other babies have and am just curious to know. PS my cat bite is all better.

Hi Blondbychoice,

That is a good question! We have 2 Golden Retriever's (ages 5 and 6), and the one will find a shady place to lay and the other one will lay in the sun. They go outside if one of us is out there, otherwise they are usually in the house or will go back indoors if they get too hot. But we can't figure out either why the one will lay in the sun, even when it's super hot out. Maybe someone will have an answer?

I live in the South where it is way more than just hot, but ridiculously humid. To the point where you can't even breath when you're outside. So, the few times a day I let my dog outside, he normally wants right back in and then the first thing he does is lay down directly on the air vent. I would never let him stay outside longer than a few minutes right now anyway. He's got black fur too so that would be just mean on my part. I tried to leave him out yesterday evening when I was washing my car and he went in his house :) But, in the fall when it's cooler, he will lay directly in the sun all the time. My cat also likes to lay in the sunshine that streams in the through the windows.

Obviously your dog just really likes to lay in the sun. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just don't let him stay out too long this time of year. {#emotions_dlg.crying}

Your puppy must be like me! There has never been a day too hot that I can remember. As long as pup is offered fresh cool water and is able to get out of the sun if pup likes...I'd say pup just has cold blood and the sun feels nice....

we had a lab who would do something like this. He would sit near the fire, till his fur was hot. Panting away. He liked it. Go figure. Your guy likes the feel of the heat. He's not going to have a heat stroke just lying there. Leave him be.

My friends black lab loves to lay on the black asphalt driveway instead of the cool grass even in this awful heat. Just keep checking on him for heat related issues. I would assume it makes their bones or muscles feel better. My arthritic rabbit lays in the window all day in the sun. It could also be like us humans that some prefer warmer weather and others like it cooler. I think it's normal.

We have two dogs one is a Cairn Terrier wheat in color and she just can't stand the heat. She goes out and right back in again to lay under the AC. We also have a black terrier mix (our rescue baby) and she will lay in that hot sun all day if I let her. I call her a baked potato...LOL...I guess just like people, some like the heat and some don't. Silly pooches.

My little dog does this, too. Someone once told me that it feels good on their bones. Maybe they are a little arthritic like my dogs when I was a little girl. They would sit right in front of the fireplace. I thought for sure they were going to burn up. They both had arthritis, so we assumed it was to make them feel better.

I thought about this...maybe he's a brown lab trapped in a golden body and is trying to get a suntan?{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

LOL!{#emotions_dlg.lol} I have had a back & yellow lab. Explains the yellow sunbathing. Maybe the black was jealous of the yellows & is trying to bleach her fur or get that sun streaked look.

When outdoors my (wheaten color) cairn terrier will seek the sun spots. My keeshond will look for the shady areas. I just let him lay in the sun for a while and then move him to a cooler area. He has never had any problems as a result of this. In the house he will also search for sunny areas.

Jojo ------------- Cairn terriers; aren't they the greatest?! Brodie is personality +++++.

I have a 12 yr old Irish Setter who has always liked to lay in the sun. She'll lay in the middle of the yard! I keep a eye on her and move her after a bit. 'specially now she's 12 and diabetic, but I figure she just likes to lay in the sun sometimes. She's the only Irish I have owned that does that, but the person I got her from has had dogs that have done that. Might be an inherited behavior in some dogs?

One of my babies like to sun himself too. I think its great, it must be soothing for them to feel the heat on the bones and they need VIT D as well as humans so as long as he has had his water and doesnt totally over do it, I would let him. They are so funny sometimes.

My black lab does this too. If we are getting groceries out of the car or doing something else in the garage, she will go lay in the sun in the driveway, otherwise she is inside all day except to do her business.

I grew up with a Black Lab and she was a sun worshipper. She had her spot that she'd go and hang out in the sun in the mornings. I swear she would get sunbleached on her back. By mid summer you could see some dark brown in her jet bacl fur. She was a sweet dog. We got her at 8 weeks old and she lived to the ripe old age of 16.5 years old. She was a dear old lady.

Now I have 2 Siberian Huskies (snow dogs with very thick coats) and I live in New Mexico (HOT) and they BOTH like to sunbathe. My female does it a LOT. She lays out there in the dirt part of the yard (have you tried to grow grass in the desert?). I make her come in after a while. She is black and white too. You'd think she'd be baked. My male has a thicker coat than she does, but he does it also. His coat isn't as dark as her's. He's gray and white. Just not as much and not for as long. He will get up and move under the tree in the shade.

They both will cool off in their pool (kiddie wading pool) that is in the shade. That or they come in and lay on the tile in the living room under the fan to cool off.

Why? I have no idea.

{#emotions_dlg.glare} When I had my Lab Mix Shana .... she loved the sun also. She would sit outside right in the sun, don't know why some dogs love to sit in the sun, and some hate and can not tolerate the sun.Like people some love summer , and some people hate it!! My two bas sett hounds hate being in the heat.... I have been letting them do there biz in our backyard and then they both run back to the patio, They cannot wait to get back into the AC!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

maybe the dog has a pain and the heat makes it feel better

Desertdi, don't know if you are joking or serious but as my last black lab/dobie/shepard got older(lived to be 16 1/2) she use to lay in the sun. She did have arthritis and yes, the vet did say the sun probably does help but still couldn't let her lay there too long, had to go and bring her in as well.

We now have 4 small dogs and one black one loves to lay in the shade but in the grass, has her own spot but too, don't leave any out too long although none but her go out if I don't go with them other than to go potty and right back in the house(doggy door).

I have two dogs - a golden and a basset. My basset does what your golden does and my golden does her "business" and runs back inside and sleeps on the ac vent!
