Canned baked beans--hot or cold?

Started 1346950754.443 in Kitchen & Food Talk | Last reply 1347247593.2 by jewel3

Oh come on now--don't say "neither!" My husband and I were talking on Labor Day about how much we like them straight out of the can, drained of the juice and not heated up. I guess it is because that's how both of us had them growing up. We hardly ever eat them, but when we have hamburgers we'll pop open a can.

You can put mustard and molasses and onions and stuff in them and bacon on top and bake them, but otherwise, just cold is fine with us!

Out favorite brand is Bush's and just the original ones! How about you? What do you like?

A lot of people eat 'em cold, right out of the can (I remember hearing that Frank Sinatra used to love to eat Campbell's Pork and Beans that way).

I like them hot, though. I'm a big fan of Campbell's Bean Soup, too. It's easy to use less liquid to change the consistency, and add some great spices. I used to make bean soup from scratch, but don't care to soak beans anymore.

Cold is good, though I do like them baked too!

Hot for me. That fatty, "slimy" liquid most canned beans come in just doesn't do it for me cold. Not to say I don't like lots of things cold that are normally eaten hot, pizza being one, fried fish another.

Dh eats them cold, I think he picked that up from when he was in the Marine Corps. When they're out in the field, they eat stuff cold right from the can. Anyway, they used to!

DH eats them cold. He likes the Bush's new Sweet Mesquite & the Bourbon Brown Sugar. When he is smoking something on the smoker he will throw them in a tin pan & put them on the smoker.

I've been known to sneak and savor a cold spoonful right out of the can while I'm cooking, but I've never considered serving them cold for a meal.

Cold; right out of the can. I have several favorites from Bush's brand. I don't like them heated{#emotions_dlg.huh}

Well I will happily tell hubby that we are not alone! Isn't that funny? When I was growing up, we always called them pork and beans, not baked beans. Now I am older and sophisticated and call them baked beans. . . LOL!!!

When I was growing, we only had the plain pork and beans with sweet tomato sauce. One kind, not with all the added goodies they have in them today. I am glad you started this thread. My husband thought I was 'different' also because I like them room temperature! He said they ate the plain ones for breakfast in England. He doesn't get them here!

Sorry, I really have to say "both" but I do lean in the direction of "cold".

That's my favorite too, but I like all the Bush's flavors of them. And yes....I prefer my cold....right out of the can!

You should always lightly boil anything that comes out of a can. Then if you want to eat them cold it's fine.

I like Bush's baked beans. Aldies has beans in a can that looks and tastes like Bush's--very good. I'll have them and sausage for dinner tonight. Hot or room temperature--either for me.

Cold??!! Ewwwwwwww! Never! I don't know anyone who's ever eaten then cold. My ex used to eat them right out of the saucepan, rather than pouring them into a bowl. I didn't think there was a worse thing he could do with them, but apparently there is. Bleurgh.

Down here I like the Bush's Original heated up. Back in central NY we had a local brand called Grandma Brown's that was quite good. Miss them down here.

I like them right out of the can while my husband likes his heated. A note to StylishLady. We moved south from NY 4 years ago and couldn't believe they didn't sell Grandma Browns beans. For a couple years, whenever we had visitors from the north they would always bring us Grandma Browns beans. Lets just say I think we have enough to last us for about 10 years!!

By "cold" I mean right out of the can, not heated up. So to be accurate, room temperature.

I eat crunchy canned corn not heated all the time. I LOVE it that way. I get those little pop top cans and have it for lunch or a snack if I'm in a carb mood.

I like mine at room temperature, straight from the can, Sooner. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup} They're delicious!

Wow, Sooner! It seems that you and I have a lot in common. My personal favorite it Mexi corn, by the Green Giant. I love that stuff, and straight from the can with a spoon.

To me, if you heat it up, it's not as good. I love it from the can at room temperature. Done it this way all of my adult life with no problems at all.

Love beans straight from the can. My brother and I are both in our 60's and we both like 100% beef hot dogs eaten cold. We laugh because when we traveled as kids (there were three of us in the back of a 1953 Oldsmobile being driven from CA to WI during the summer for vacation). Dad put the pedal to the metal and off we went. We never ate in restaurants. Dad stopped at some little grocery store, bought hot dogs and cinnamon rolls, tossed them in the back seat, and that was our breakfast. Stuck with us, I guess.

If you always tell the truth you will never have to try and remember what you said before .....
