What is the difference between Greek Yogurt and Reg. Yogurt?

I have heard so much lately about Greek yogurt and just wondered what the difference was between it and regular yogurt.

I think it is because it has more protien and it is creamier. It tastes more tart than regular yogart. I use the plain in place of sour cream. Hope this helps.

The following (link) gives a detailed explanation if you're interested:

http://health.usnews.com/health-news/diet-fitness/diet/articles/2011/09/30/greek-yogurt-vs-regular-yogurt-which-is-more-healthful

I think Fage Greek Yogurt plain 0% or 2% is Great! for dip. Jamie Oliver has simple recipe that can be used on salmon, with raw vegetables, crackers etc It's chopped peeled seeded cucumber, extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, seeded minced red chili pepper and optional dill.

Edited to add, I only use Greek yogurt (for myself). To me everything is better about it including the more dense texture.

Greek yogurt is regular yogurt that has been strained or drained of the whey liquid , making it a thicker consistency. You can do the same if you place a coffee filter in a sieve and dump a container of plain yogurt in it. Leave it set over a bowl and the liquid will drain, leaving you with "Greek" yogurt. You can vary the thickness by how much liquid you allow to drain out. Drain out too much and it becomes 'yogurt cheese' the consistency of a very soft cheese ala cream cheese.

Some pre made "Greek' yogurts have toppings on the side, like Fage, others just mix them in but add much less in than regular yogurt so it is still slightly more tart with less sugar. Greek yogurts are always thicker than regular yogurt.

I like yogurt, but, I just can't get into the Greek variety.

It does have a stronger taste. It's not horrible, I just dont really care for the taste, or for that matter, the thicker, heavier texture.

I don't mind the Greek yogurt but one of my DD's absolutely loves it. They are so strong smelling to me that I can't stand the smell of them sitting in the wastebasket in the kitchen so I have her wrap the peel off lid and container in a tied plastic bag before throwing it away. It may sound graphic but to me the containers smell like dirty diapers. LOL

The John Stamos commercial!!! Yummmm {#emotions_dlg.tt1}

The Yummmm was for John Stamos, not for the yogurt (although I do like Greek yogurt) but after watching that commercial, was there even yogurt in it??!! {#emotions_dlg.tt1}

Sorry ladies, but I disagree, I feel greek yogurt is far more palatable and less sour than American yogurt. The Fage and 3 greek Gods are so good and good for you! I have it every morning with fresh strawberrys. If you go to Greece they serve it with fresh fruit and honey yummmm!

Higher protein - and it tastes awful :)

I guess its a matter of taste. I'm really not a yogurt lover but LOVE the taste of Greek yogurt! It's far better than regular! So creamy and I really love using the 0% fat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. No difference in taste! I don't know what I did before I discovered delicious Greek yogurt! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

I only like certain brands of Greek yogurt. My fav is Chobani -mango, black cherry, blood orange are very good. I don't care for Fage at all.

I like the chobani, and Oikos brands. I think they taste just fine. The greek has more protein and less sugar.

Thanks so much everyone - for your suggestions and brand names. I think I would like the heavier texture and will see what brand my store carries. And I need more protein.

Thanks again.

I try to also buy them on sale. They're pricier than reg yogurts. I can find Chobani for 1.00 a container on sale. Otherwise it can be 1.79 each. I sometimes also buy them at BJs - they are roughly 1.00 each also. 12 containers - mango/cherry/pineapple or strawberry/blueberry/peach.

They say greek yogurt is healthier than regular yogurt. I'm glad. I LOVE greek yogurt. It is decadent and tastes so rich and creamy. Love it with fruit. It's like a dessert you're not supposed to eat but in actuality is it something you're supposed to eat!

I love, love Dannons Greek yogurt with fruit. OMGoodness, it is so good and creamy. Yes, it is higher in protein, which is a big plus for menopausal women.

Creamier, but very tart. I've tried to like it, but just don't.

Thicker and not sweet.

I love Yoplait Greek Yogurt. The fruit is at the bottom and I only mix in a tiny bit, I like the plain greek yogurt almost by itself. Regular yogurt is thin and sickeningly sweet, makes me sick and nauseous.

The Greek yogurts that I have tried (Chobani for one) don't have any artificial sweeteners or other fillers in them. I used to eat Yoplait lite until I relized how many additives it contained. I use it everyday in my Smoothies.

The Fage with the cheeries on the side tastes like Cheesecake. Smile

I think now that many companies are jumping on the "Greek" bandwagon, we may have to read the labels more closely. Some of the bad additives might just creep in as they try to placate people who want the sweetness.

Most of those brands have a lot of fat in them. Yoplait has 2g.

Regular yogurt is ok. Greek yogurt is AWESOME!!!!!!!! I can't get enough of it. 2% plain Greek yogurt over fresh berries is so creamy and delicious, it feels so sinful and dessert-y but it's so low calorie and good for you. I'll eat regular yogurt if there's nothing else, but given a choice it's hands down Greek yogurt all the way for me.

I've been eating Greek yogurt for 5 years and could never go back to any of the original style yogurts...they seem so liquidy to me now. Greek yogurt just tastes better for whatever reason.
