old fashioned knife sharpener?

Started 1323728548.973 in Kitchen & Food Talk | Last reply 1323817089.293 by NovaStar

Does anyone know where I can purchase one of those really old knife sharpeners with what looked like circles on the top of a handle? I've looked and looked at kitchen equipment stores, including some on the web, but no luck thus far.

Would appreciate any help with this...

I just thought of what you're talking about. LOL, not sure what they're called.

debc, I'll bet that's exactly what the OP is referring to!

My parents had one, & IMHO, it ruined knives - or maybe it was the way they used it - scraping the blade back & forth. After a billion years of 'sharpening', it left a concave arc along the blade of the knife. {#emotions_dlg.laugh} (which they used anyway)

Better to learn to use a 'steel', like the ones deb pictured in her 1st post.

Good luck, prof!

Ebay maybe. I typed in antique knife sharpener. I can't remember seeing one for years.

Can't you just wait for the knife sharpening man to come down the street? Any 1 remember THAT!

My dad always used a whetstone and oil. That's the old fashion way of sharpening knives and probably the best.

Thanks so much to everyone...I did find several that are very close at "old country store" websites. But, this one is the real deal, debc...Again thanks...

If you are still looking, Accusharp works well. QVC used to carry them. My parents bought a set (combo pack one scissor & one knife sharpener.) Amazon carries them. And so do some hardware stores.
