Karen Connelly from Value Vision

Maybe I'm behind the times, but I just saw her on a channel called, I think, Gems tv. She looks different. Her face looks very narrow or something. I like her straight hair. She looks younger but the only reason I recognized her, just as I was going on to another channel, was because she said, 'Get on the lines.' And of course I knew.

Yeah, the hosts seems to switch around quite a bit...from QVC to HSN, ShopNBC to JTV and GemsTV...which is a new one for me, but I don't really care for "Let's Play the Game."  (Let's not.)  I do notice, however, that QVC doesn't ever seem to hire people from other networks.  They must like having that person associated only with them.  As for Karen Conlley, I always found her rather annoying.

I know. She was kind of coarse. She could sell, though. She referred to big stoned rings as 'honkers' and then  do her point and fluff routine-how you would point at something and fluff your hair so everyone would notice your ring. She also said, 'go big or stay at home' which I agreed with. If you can't even see a ring on someone's hand, why bother to wear it (sentiment aside). I did agree with her on that. Get on the lines was very irritating. I don't miss her.

If I were QVC I would do the same thing-not hire people from other networks. It makes you seem more exclusive I think. It's like being type cast as an actor. People can't take you seriously when they know you play a certain role. They think you really are that person.{#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

I've seen her on GemsTV also.  Anyone know anything about this channel or have any experience with them?  They seem to have some really good prices, but the shipping is high if you aren't buying a high ticket item.

We get GemsTV too.

British Ford did a brief stint for a few weeks about a month ago, filling in for another host who was on vacation.

i haven't purchased anything but it's a pretty cool format.

I watch Gemstv frequently and have no problem with the items I have ordered.  Quality merchandise I have received.

As for Karen Connelly, we call her "Ol Yeller" because she yells always.  She also butcheres the English language with "dese", "yesh", "dis", "dat", etc.  She sounds like someone Larry the Cable Guy would talk about.    We will/do not watch Karen; we don't need any more coarsening of our language and I want someone who is selling me something to act professional and sound even more so.

GEMS TV is going off air in May. The announcement was made two weeks ago. Like the station or not, I hate to see all those employees lose their jobs.

Didn't Value Vision become ShopNBC?

Karen went JTV too. She was there a very, very, very short time. After that she landed at the Reno station.

QVC hired Nancy Hornback from GemsTV

Paul Deasy came from HSN (and went back there), and Lisa Robertson came from Shop at Home.  It's a small industry, and I would think that they hire people they think are good, regardless of where else they've been.

i personally can't stand any of the hosts on JTV- I saw one the other night with the most ugly names I ever seen! How can they let someone like that show rings? I wrote them when they wanted a comment about a bracelet that I got, which was a good deal and said that they must have cheap hosts, which lets them have good prices.

It is interesting the movement of people across the networks! There is another thread about Gems TV just started about it closing. I personally do not like their selling format or the background music.

I've noticed that JTV recently started using "models" for some of their shows. They also have mannequins (ha ha -talk about a cheap model!) I guess they are moving into the other shopping networks format. They've probably never had models cause they don't do anything other than jewelry (and their face line??). I agree some of the hosts there are not the "model type" - but most of them have been around forever. I've watched JTV for way over 12 years - when I first started watching they had someone that would type in the description onto the screen as the host was talking. It was very archaic. And remember when they sold Beanie Babies??? Back when they were ACN - the collectibles network. They used to do the auction style sales too on everything. Oh my - the walk down memory lane!

Oh yeah, Karen and Skip - now there's a trip down memory lane!  She always referred to jewelry as "big honkin'......"  She never was a real classy person.  Kind of funny though.  Skip was just a big doofus.

Yes, Valu Vision became Shop NBC and was CVN  before it was Valu Vision until QVC bought CVN.

You are saying that you don't want to shop with them because someone had an ugly name??? That's hardly something that he or she could help, and surely wouldn't have any bearing on how the jewelry is presented.  Did her name make her fingers look bad?

I think they do a lot of things differently to affect their margins, including paying cash up front for their items, renting very low-cost airtime, and having low production values.  Some of the hosts have unfortunate voices, which is trying, but I can deal with the rest of it, since the prices are really good!
