Resin filled gold earrings

Started 1321988632.347 in Jewelry Talk | Last reply 1322150538.407 by Fluffy-2

I've seen David, the buyer, stand on these twice so far today, they won't dent. But resin? Seems like a step down from silicone, and I won't even buy that. But I guess no one will know, so what the heck for people that like those hoops. Good price, 69.00 I think.

"14K electroformed gold surrounds diamond dust resin, which reinforces the graduated hoop earring; diamond dust resin creates an earring that is stronger and more dent-resistant than hollow gold earring"...

Resin is plastic, right? And silicone... plastic-y? What's wrong with a hollow hoop? What do you have to be doing to dent your earring? Ha, maybe the answer is not PG.

I only want 14 kt gold. No filled in cr~ap. With the price of gold I guess they have to fill it with something to keep it from bending & breaking when you put them on since they are so flimsy.

I think these( and many silicone filled) earrings have extra-extra thin layers of gold, almost like a plating. That's why they are so cheap. The old hollow hoops used to have thick "walls" of gold. Many of my older hoops are hollow, but very strong and weight 10 grams and more. QVC would be selling them for $700-$900 these days.

What's wrong with a hollow hoop is, they don't want to use enough gold to form a sturdy hoop-wall. This type of jewelry is like vermeil, but without the sterling - its a thin wash of gold over silicon or plastic. It is most likely all but worthless.

Caveat emptor.

Worthless is the right word for it. If the Q can't or won't do it right, then don't bother, IMO.

I wonder what happens if someone decides to sell for the gold. Would the weight not be off?

Any jeweler would tell right away that is not solid 14k.
