HELP! How Do I get Rid of Pigeons from My Bird Feeder??

Started 1305416474.1 in In the Garden | Last reply 1306895355.603 by Dani Michael

I have read that safflower seeds keep the pigeons away and the cardinals and doves love them. I have a lot of cardinals, doves, chicadees, etc. I put this out and the pigeons love it!!!

They are all over my garden I am at my wits end. I hate to deprive all the other birds of food but don't want the darn pigeons.

Any ideas??? Please someone help, I don't want them making all over my vegies when they come up in the summer.

This may not be all that helpful to you, but it's all that I can think of at the moment.

Stop feeding the birds for a few days & they might go elsewhere.

Most of all, if you're able to, invest in a different bird feeder. There are some that you can make adjustments on the maximum weight allowable on the perch. Songbirds are much lighter than heavy pigeons, so they'll be fine w/ a different/new feeder.

Also, is there grass under your feeder? Pigeons are bottom feeders, so try to come up w/ a way where they can't get at the fallen seeds. If it's asphalt, sweep, sweep, sweep!

I know it's not great advice, but good luck! I know what a nuisance they are!

Have you tried those plastic owls, hawks, etc? I also hear there's an electronic noise machine that some say works to drive them away....though I've no idea if it actually does!

If the pigeons get on the feeder, you need the kind of feeder described above and put a seed catcher on the bottom of it so the seeds don't drop to the ground where the pigeons love best to eat.

We're having a big flap over people feeding pigeons in Albuquerque. They actually are feeding songbirds but the pigeons muscle in. Now they're asking people to quit feeding birds period as the pigeons have become a nuisance and health hazard.

In our area, we have red tailed hawks or sharp shinned ones (sparrow hawks). These help keep the pigeon population down.

It's weird, but I've fed birds here all my life and I don't think I've ever seen more than one or two pigeons ever show up at a feeder. We get a ton of mourning doves, but no pigeons. There are plenty around the area, but for whatever reason they don't bother our bird feeders.

I did a google search and found a lot of info. For those of you that have birds roosting where you don't want them, you can buy some kind of tape that they will not want to land on. Try your hardware store - here is the link to the article.

Another article said to cover the area under the bird feeder with large rocks so the pidgeons can't clean up after the other birds. Here are a couple more links to articles about this.

Hey, kachina624! That big flap is the sound of pigeons! I'm on the Westside and, unfortunately, I'm one of those people who attracts birds to my yard -- including the pigeons from the apartment complex a few blocks away.

I had to change the feeder type over the years to discourage them, and the tube feeders have helped. I have fewer pigeons, but they still find their way into the yard.

They're talking about issuing fines to people who feed birds. The bird feed store down the street has already closed; I wonder how many people will give up their feeders to avoid the hassle?

Five pairs would be lovely. I have a soft spot for pigeons and a few years ago I had a favorite -- a beautiful black bird with a white head. Named her Martha.

But one day I counted the pigeons on my roof. I stopped counting when I reached seventy.

That's nice. Like someone else said, I've fed the birds for years and have never had a pigeon at my feeding area...lots and lots of mourning doves. This Spring is this first time I've seen a white robin around the neighborhood. It's a very bright white with a few brown feathers on its wings. It's definitely a robin and is always with them. Anyone seen a robin like this in their area? I'm in the Chicago burbs.

There is a natural comfort in the company of creatures.

I haven't seen a pigeon since we moved from the city almost 30 years ago. But, mourning doves are actually part of the pigeon family.

I don't feed the birds because there are lots of natural feeding opportunities in our immediate area. We are wooded, have tons of all sorts of greenery and berries, and a stream. But, if I did, I would feed whichever species came to eat.

Ha Ha!

Ok, I don't know how true it is, but I have heard that pigeons hate windchimes. We have pigeons in our town that never come near my side of the street. My next door neighbor has windchimes, but I don't know if that is the reason.

You could always try it (if you like the sound of windchimes).

I love windchimes........I have them in the rear of my apt where there is a big old tree which stretches high above my fourth fl apt......I've never seen a pidgeon land in the tree and there's really no problem back there ..... occasionally I'll catch one perched on that A/C....as much as I love the chimes....it usually takes a strong wind to get them going......so don't think they can have anything to do with the filthy creatures.{#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

We have many feeders and many different kinds of birds and yes, on occasion, some pigeons- since some of the more favorable birds are also "ground feeders"( ie. cardinals sometimes eat from the ground)-- it would discourage them as well as the pigeons. I don't like them either, but they don't come every day- we never know when they're going to show up and it's not always the same ones so as far as getting rid of them- it's probably a losing battle unless you want to shoot them ( I'm not condoning that though)

Don't like them much either, but they (and squirrel-boy) provide lots of entertainment for Kitty (!)

Hi LiftaLeg...........we've got MORE than our share of those also.......BUT......they don't travel four stories. {#emotions_dlg.blink} When I rethink that............it's probably a good thing.......considering the side effects of those villains.
