BEWARE! Shark Steam Mop Exploded!!

Started 1333260707.923 in For the Home Talk | Last reply 1339250240.297 by Abby Grace
I wanted to warn anyone with a SHARK Steam Mop that mine EXPLODED today! If I had been standing any closer I would have been burned. I googled it, and it appears to have happened to others as well. It doesn't sound as if Shark is very helpful in this matter! I would be especially concerned about steam mopping around small children. Please be careful!

This happened to my Shark steam mop, as well. I was steaming the floors and noticed steam wasn't coming out. I leaned down to see if I could tell what was wrong with the mop and suddenly the attachment shot off the mop. It was almost like there was a pressure buildup of steam or something. Back to Costco it went!

We had this happen also. Thank goodness it wasn't pointed at our faces.

The steam doesn't come out and it suddenly bursts off because you keep pumping it because no steam comes out.

I cleaned mine out by soaking in vinegar. The steam holes were clogged up.

Yes, I agree. They can be dangerous.

When they run you out of town, get out front and make it look like a parade.

same thing here, I ending up tossing it...didn't think about the vinegar. Shame because it worked well.

I wouldnt buy another

exploded isnt the word I'd use for the mop head popping off in my case

There is still steam coming out of the vents on the bottom. Once it exploded out of the side, the steam comes out there as well.

The steam has to be truly free flowing to avoid pressure building up in the tank. The vents have to be really clean, not just "not clogged", to maintain the correct equilibrium.

Here is an article about big steam exposions. Issues are the same with home steamers.

I won't allow a steamer in my home because of safety concerns.

Well it was flowing freely out of the bottom when it occurred.

Since it's been a while since I returned mine, I don't remember how often the directions said to clean it, but I'd only had my mop MAYBE two months. I used it about once a week, so I'd only used it maybe 6-8 times.

Much depends upon how hard you water is. I live in a very hard water area & I have to deal with built up scale every 2 weeks!

My sister had the same thing happen with her shark steam mop. I had one and the handle broke off.

Also had one blow up. Small steam hole will plug from the chemicals in the water from the house water supply. I think it glogged with calcium when the water turned to stem. I think if I had used distilled water it would not have happened. Threw it in the trash as I had tore it apart to see why it blew up. Have not read direction. It may have said to use distilled water, but it does not mention it on TV. Junk product.

I was planning to get my Shark steam mop out this afternoon. I will definitely check it beforehand. Thanks for the reminder about the vinegar, Glass Lady K.

I had a similar incident. One day, it seemed as if the steam just stopped, so I pumped a few times. When I lifted the mop head off the floor, the head shot off, flew across the kitchen, and cracked the microwave door. After I bought a new microwave, my husband has been keeping the mop head clean. LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY!
