Here is an interesting article by the editors of Reader's Digest regarding items that may not be so safe or "wise" to purchase at a yard sale: http://www.rd.com/slideshows/10-things-you-should-never-buy-at-garage-sales/9/?v=all

I'd agree with those.

Let's not forget underwear and toothbrushes!

I agree with those and could add some more.

michigander1 - LOL.

I agree that there could be a lot more added to the list such as rollar skates or rollar blades though that may fall under the "shoes" category :) They might be worn down or such.

Most of that should be common sense. What with all the lawsuits, I'm surprised anyone manufactures baby furniture or car seats anymore. Regarding bicycle helmets: unless you are racing, most bike accidents end up with scraped knees. hands, elbows. Very seldom is there a head injury. Kids should really be wearing pads to protect other parts.

With regard to bicycle helmets, there are cases of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) especially if a car or other mode of transportation actually hits that individual.

Here is a link that includes more info re: (regarding) wearing a helmet and bicycle riding: http://www.thinkfirst.org/About/Facts.asp and can click "bicycle safety" and other topics.

We had an old cheap, rusted out Brinkman meat smoker sitting on the sidewalk for spring cleanup trash day once during a garage sale and a lady asked me how much for it. At first I couldn't figure out what she was talking about. Then I saw it was that awful smoker and said $4! She grabbed it up, poured old rainwater out and took off with it!

My 2 cents: With the bed-bug situation being what it is today,...I'm afraid of 2nd hand things, period.

Sounds silly, but that fact has turned my little world upside down.

I'm a garage sale/thrift shop/junk/antique/consignment store person, & have hauled lots of stuff off curbs, & occasionally even out of dumpsters! The thrill of the hunt & of finding something unique for a song.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

No more! {#emotions_dlg.crying}
