For those who have a house-cleaning service, how much do you pay?

I'm thinking about a once every week or two cleaning service to clean, and am wondering what the going rate is. I have always done my own cleaning, so have no idea what the normal rates are.

I live in MA and I do house cleaning. My rate is $25 per hour. I don't know what other people charge, but I would advise you not to go with a cleaning service. They pay their girls $8.00 per hour and from the stuff I see in the newspaper, they supplement their incomes by stealing your stuff. Best to go with a referral from someone who has a private housekeeper.

Definitely go with a private housekeeper! I have someone come every two weeks to vacuum, clean hardwood floors and clean bathrooms (4). We have a three story townhome (2500 sq. ft.). She asked for $65/visit, but I pay her $75.

We had four bedrooms, four baths, cleaned once a week, and cooked our evening meal. She lived nearby. We paid her $125.00 plus tip. Retired now, cleaning myself. Miss her!!

We pay $120 every two weeks. 2800 sq feet home. Word of mouth is how we found ours. They are a husband and wife team that clean and run their business. Small operation.

I lived in SC before and it was cheaper though. Maybe $95 a visit.

My cleaning lady comes every other Thursday ... I have a 2-story, 3 bedroom, 2 bath home ... I have had her for 8 years ... she charges me $10 per hour ... won't take more than that (I have offerred)... so I give her a BIG bonus at Christmas ...

She was a referral by a friend ... but you can check the classified ads and ask for references ....

Try Angie's List for your area. That might be a place to start, anyway.

It's going to vary quite a bit depending on where you live, how often you have them clean, and what the service does. I'd suggest you get some recommendations from friends who have cleaning services and then have several of those services and perhaps some you find in angie's list or other referral services come in, explain their services, and give you quotes.

I had Merry Maids come twice - about 15 yrs apart. Figured surely they'd have improved by then, but nope.

$160 was the cost 10 yrs ago (the second time I tried 'em) to mop kitchen & laundry rm, clean 2.5 bathrooms, make up 2 twins & 1 full bed, run sweeper and dust. Zero dishes to wash, zero laundry, zero windows, zero picking up, zero fingerprints off woodwork, etc.

The team of 2 women would be in my home for 2-2.5 hrs, the estimator said. They were here less than 45 minutes total. I was here when they arrived, ran to the bank, and when I got home, they were outta here. And it showed. And to top it off, they'd shattered one of my Christopher Radko collectible oranments ($100 one) that was in the living room.

A second crew came the following week and spent 2.5 hrs total here, doing what should have been done the first time. But by then I was so frustrated I just cancelled 'em.

Good luck finding a "private housekeeper" to do routine cleaning under $100/hr, I'm told.

I have a private housekeeper and I pay her $15 an hour. She is usually here about four hours to clean my 2,000 sq. ft. house.

I have a woman who comes every other week. I have had her for 23 years this month!

I pay her $140 each time, for about 5-6 hours. My house is 3100 sqft, but it is now just DH & me. As she tells me, the mess of a family of 5 is less now, but she's also 23 years older so it's harder!

She does an amazing job and I laugh when I find she will leave loose change on the counter when she has run across it. I trust her completely, and care about her and her family. I got her hooked up with 5 other people all those years ago and they still use her too.

Trust women and cats to make the best personal choices.

OMG--what a deal you are getting. I was paying my sister, but she moved. I got a quote last week for $135. YIKES. I'd LOVE to find someone for $65. The going rate here in Carmel is about $40 to $45 an hour minimum.

I had Molly Maids for awhile Zoo here in Carmel. They did a nice job actually, but it was $80 for 2 women for one HOUR. They only did wet work. I don't know why it's so hard to find someone here in Indiana that does a nice job that is not pricey. I just can't find anyone independent. I got a quote last week $130 or $135. I've had a quote up to $175 for my home-only 2600 square feet. I wonder how everyone else is finding these people for so cheap. I want to find someone not so pricey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a private gal. She brings a friend or her daughter. I pay $60. She does tend to move fast and get out before 2 hours. When she leaves I see things that need another go over. I don't think she would win any cleaning contests but for the most part the house looks better than when she came and I am satisfied. Visible surface cleaning would be what I end up with. If I want GREAT I guess I would have to pay for a service and pay double, perhaps triple per visit.

I have her come in once or twice a month.

We have Merry Maids who come twice a month. There is a team of two and they stay for two hours. I started with them years ago after an injury but have stayed with them. They aren't perfect but it is so much less work for me. I had a couple of teams who didn't do a good job so I called and requested others. I have now had the same ones for about three years and I am very happy with them. They don't like to raise prices once you have signed up so I pay $97 for about 3000 square feet! I have a friend who just started with them and she pays $150 for the same size house! I definitely got a bargain!

So the question is...... what do you pay her?

I have an incredibly efficient woman, and I pay her $80 for my 1800 sq foot townhouse, with 110# black Lab! She is worth every penny - I found her word of mouth from another neighbor. She's been in this country 12 years and is originally from the former Yugoslavia.

She is also now helping me clean out and organize my basement area -- I have about 15 black garbage bags sitting in my living room waiting for a Wednesday charity pickup.

I trust her completely and am very grateful to have her. I usually leave some type of European chocolate for her with her check, and @ Christmas (also her birthday) I try and do a double check. She has not had an easy life, is a very hard worker, and also a delightful person to know.

Actually registered and a poster since 2004 ~

Every two weeks, 80.00 and she is a miracle worker.

eta--I saw her leaving a neighbor's house, vacuum in hand and asked her if she had any openings. I just plain got lucky.

Ask around...there are a lot of people who are doing cleaning to supplement their income. Before I moved here to be a caregiver for my parents, they had a very nice lady who worked privately. She charged $10/hr. For someone who holds basically a minimum wage job and has taxes taken out of that, a clear $10/hr is a good salary. She usually spent 2 hours a week doing the heavy duty work. My mother kept up with the rest. She said she had lots of other places that she cleaned as well, in addition to her job at Walmart.

I have 2 folks for a total of 15 hours a week. (I am disabled) They shop, cook, clean & do laundry. One does minor repairs-he is handy. I pay $10 per hour plus about $1.hour in "bonuses."

Both had other jobs & just wanted a little something to supplement their regular paycheck.

I am flexible about hours & allowing their kids to come along when there is not school.

I dispurse the bonus through out the year. ex. $50 gift certificate at Thanksgiving, cash towards the kid's big Chritmas present in early December, and Spur's basketball tickets along the way( a biggie in San Antonio).

A crew of 4 women comes once weekly, cleans my small house in about 1.5 hrs and I pay the head of the crew $80. She charged me $75 but I raised it a little. I leave the cash so the girls know how much I pay. No laundry and I pick up so that they just really clean everything.I like them all and love it that my house gets a little makeover each week. I've had a single housekeeper many times and like this blitz process best.Last edited on 9/5/2011
