Bare legs or panty hose?

Started 1290404356.347 in Fashion Talk | Last reply 1290481794.227 by TX-starlight

I need a final decision on what is appropriate now. I understand going with bare legs for a casual skirt or dress, but what about a more formal dress that hits right at or above the knee? Does the color of the dress make a difference? And what color do you wear as far as shoes/pantyhose go with a red dress? In my mothers day, you weren't dressed appropriately unless you had pantyhose on to "finish" the outfit. I'm not sure if that's still the standard today. Everybody I have asked gives me a 50/50 answer! Help!!!

I say bare legs always. If you are wearing a mid-length dress and are very pale, maybe use a self-tanner,but come to think of it, I admire women who go bare-legged and have pale skin so skip the tanner. Pantyhose are just awful, unless you wear opaque tights. IMHO

There's no way I would go out in the cold of winter here bare-legged! You can always wear tights or textured tights if you don't want to wear traditional panty hose.

I think the bare leg look only works on young ladies with exceptional legs. Even then, I think it is a sloppy trend. It looks very unfinished, and in the winter I think it looks just plain silly.

My daughter got married last February. The girls wore below the knee dresses and had bare legs. I didn't care for the look at all. I think sheer hose would have been much nicer. And, what was worse is that my 60 year old SIL, with chubby legs, and scars from knee surgery, wore an above the knee dress with no hose. It looked trashy, in my opinion.

My understanding is the bare-leg look is going the way of the dinosaur except for summers.

IMHO you can only rock the bare leg look if you have good legs AND good skin. The shape of my legs aren't bad but I was unfortunately born with Excema. It's a mild case, but I have the driest legs no matter how much I moisturize and would be really embarrassed to show them. I've seen gals out there who have a lot of bites - not sure if they're mosquito or flea bites - and they're wearing bare legs in a short dress at a formal event. I just don't think it looks elegant at all. Maybe if it's summertime and it's 100 degrees outside in a summer skirt I can understand...but in general if you don't have the nicest of skin, then you may want to wear hosiery.

I just had to deal with this same question for an event I attended that was "fancy". I decided to wear stockings and I am glad I did. It is a look that seems right for me at my age and with the type of clothes I wear. But the younger people at this event also wore stockings. I think it is a personal choice...but I think I would have felt unfinished without nylons.

I think it depends on the weather........and how good your legs are (!)

Stockings would be more appropriate. If you don't like panty hose try thigh highs.

Need to know more about the red dress. Is this a business dress, a cocktail dress, a ballroom dress, and what kind of fabric, what length, what kind of jewelry will you be wearing with it? I have a red velvet dress with which I wear sandal-like black suede/velvet (not sure which) shoes and the Nolan Miller rose pin (gold color and CZs), with the black Dennis Basso (faux) Parisian lamb coat with faux sable collar and with this I wear Silk Reflections "almost black" nylons and a little black satin clutch.

I am not going out in cold weather with bare legs. I would wear sheer tights for daytime but evening wear I would go with hose.

It's an excellent pair of pantyhose for me. Bare legs look trashy, IMO.

In the cold, it looks ridiculous to be bare legged unless you have incredible legs and tanned toned legs--even then--in the midst of winter, I think hose are the way to go.

More formal says to me hose.....no matter what the age. More polished and refined. Don't understand bare feet in dressy shoes.....yuck.

My niece got married in September. I wore a "little black dress" and sheer black panty hose. Not being a slave to fashion, I wore what I was comfortable wearing. I would have felt much less "dressy" with bare legs. JMHO.

Just be aware that if you're in a cold climate your bare legs will turn blue if you are outside. Be sure that the red in your dress and the blue of your legs don't clash. {#emotions_dlg.crying}

Oh man are we opening up this can of worms again?

I refuse to freeze in cold weather with no hose, I wear either a sheer black hose or tights when it's cold. In the summer, I wear no hose. Unless I am wearing a semi formal or formal dress and then I wear hose. I have great legs, but I have very fair legs and I refuse to self tan now, so I opt for hosiery if I am going to an event wearing a nicer dress.

I run around in sandals and skirts all summer long so hose are not necessary. I hate hose in the summer anyway and can't stand to feel them on my legs, but, if I am going to say.....a funeral or a wedding, etc. I do wear hosiery if my dress is dressy.

I don't think not wearing hose is "trashy" that is a little harsh. I think it looks better when you wear hose but I would never denigrate a woman for not wearing hose and make assumptions about her morality based on something as silly as her not wearing hose.

I do think the no hose trend will eventually go out of style. I think that hosiery can be very s@xy......I regularly wore back seam hosiery and stockings in the 80s when it was popular and DH loved them.

ITA there is something that makes you feel special, when you wear beautiful hosiery.

Regardless of how good your legs are, going bare DOES look silly when the weather turns colder (as do strappy, open toed sandals, imo). I would definitely go with hose.

I always wear my pantyhose with skirts or dresses; and at least knee highs with boots. I'll skip hosiery with pants if I'm wearing sandals or wedges.

Wear appropriate hosiery!!!! There's no 50-50 from me on this topic. I firmly believe that most women look much more polished and finished wearing hosiery with dressy clothing. With a dressy red dress, I'd suggest sheer hosiery in a color that approximates your natural skin tone.

For a while, bare legs were in vogue -- but this was NOT a good look for many women, especially those over 35 or so or those who have visible veins, skin imperfections, or less than perfectly firm and toned gams. Just about everybody besides the very, very young, fit, and lucky, IMO. Especially in chilly weather, women look ridiculous running around in short dresses with bare legs. I am now seeing hosiery in fashion mags in many styles and colors. It's BACK, thank heavens!

Wear hosiery, look good, and enjoy yourself.

PS: Over the weekend I saw Tina Fey on TV on stage accepting the Mark Twain Award for Humor. She is fit and lovely and wore a beautiful short black dress........with bare, white legs and un-enhanced knobby knees sticking out the bottom and into her lovely dress shoes. Oh, Tina. You coulda looked perfect with pantyhose.

And I say just the opposite! Sheer nude or sheer black look much more elegant. Bare legs in cold climates look ridiculous. It looks like they ran their hose and had to take them off.

No way am I showing my chicken skin legs with or without tanner. And pantyhose are out. Jeans or slacks for me. I never get invited to Westminster Abbey anyway.

I don't even like the bare legged look in summer if you're wearing anything at all dressy.

In fact, I really dislike the look on "reporters" and "newscasters" on television. So many of them are bare legged on television, and would look so very much better if they were wearing pantyhose.

Agree, sheer tights or taupe or off black panty hose. If taupe doesn't does work and try a color that blends well with the red dress. I'm 62 years old and NEVER go bare legs. OK for the younger girls, but not for me. I love tights or textured tights...Have fun at your event.

I don't wear pantyhose, ever. I will wear tights, but not with a cocktail dress.
