Etienne Aigner Handbags - Buyer Beware!

Started 1289507665.453 in Fashion Talk | Last reply 1289574669.05 by Darlene in Georgia

I'm noticing a lot of very nice looking leather bags offered on Qvc by Etienne Aigner and I bought one awhile ago and here is what happened to it in a very short time. 1st the beautiful hardware tarnished and I mean got really discolored and was very ugly...couldn't restore it back to what it once was. 2nd the leather pocket on the outside of the bag got stretched out so badly it gaped open and looked quite strange and totally different from the handbag I originally purchased; I seldom had anything in there and certainly never a heavy object. 3rd the leather was never soft...not Bmak soft anyway. Will never bother with her line again.

eta: actually I think the name Etienne in this case is referring to a man. I distinctly remember years ago the guest referring to Etienne as "him" and "he," when describing the handbags and shoes with the show host.

Wow, this is so hard to believe! I could not wait to get my first Aigner bag & boots back in the 80's! This brand is still at TJ Maxx!

I was shocked too Hooty. Not only that the 30 days had gone by and I was stuck with the bag. Didn't bother with c/s at that point; in fact threw out the bag!

Aigner use to make beautiful leather bags. They still make nice quality leather for the European market.

"Etienne" is French for "Steven," so yes, he's a man. Smile

You need to contact the manufacturer - Aigner has always backed up their products with a lifetime guaratee; if they don't hold up or break they will either repair or replace them. It's a while since I purchased any, but as recently as 3-4 years ago I worked with a woman who would purchase Aigner purses at yard sales and - if they needed something fixed or even just a good cleaning - would send them back to the manufacturer and get back either a bag in like-new condition or a brand new one.

I believe it and many things are made for qvc that are dumbed down I hate to say but it's true. I'll never forget buying a Rowenta from Qvc only to mistakenly buy the made in China version instead of Germany and sure enough mine was defective. Will never make that mistake again.

My ex mother-in-law worked at a store that sold Aigner in the late 60's. It was quality through and through back then. I always liked my Christmas gifts. This line has also appeared on HSN. Wouldn't be surprised to see it at Walmart one of these days. Amazing who ends up there, anyone remember when White Stag was a quality woman's line?

Yeah, I used to buy White Stag at Macy's. Bobbie Brooks was another once-desirable name. Some designers really sold out their names just to make money, like Oleg Cassini. I've even seen things with Pierre Cardin labels at Walmart! {#emotions_dlg.crying}

I still use some of the Aigner bags I bought back in the '80s. They USED to make beautiful bags and shoes. Too bad.......

I think the previous poster is right that some things are produced "dumbed down in quality" for qvc. I have bought a particular style of Tig handbag from the q and then found one in Macys and was shocked at the difference in the softness of the leather, pliability of the handles and color difference from the one I bought from the q. It is very distrurbing. I felt like I had bought a "reject" in buying the same bag from the q as from Macys. There was an obvious difference in quality IMO.

It's not only the quality of QVC bags. Here in PA we have Boscovs which carries Aigner. They are no better than house brands in Target or Walmart.

I agree, they use to make a great quality shoe too.

I bought one of the bags at DSW for $88.00 very early in the spring & it is GREAT!!!! The leather has held up & is soft & has quite a bit of silver hardware & it looks new. This is a bag I have carried for the past 7 months so I think it all depends on where you buy the bag. I have bought several of the bags years ago & liked them all.

I have Aigner bags that are years old and still great but I have learned not to buy them fromQVC. The ones on the Q are cheap chinese junk.

You can find Aigner handbags at TJ Maxx and Overstock.

Having worked in the industry for a few years, I suspect that Aigner is one of those companies that slaps its name on "mass tier" product lines made by some third party. The top Aigner bags might be quality, but the junk they dump at lower prices is probably not even made in the same factory! Just a hunch, having seen it before.

I had two Aigner bags that were microfiber and wore like iron. One of them I used for work for years and couldn't wear it out. The other one I bought to match my boots. I would buy them again in the microfiber in a heartbeat. They were like a Timex watch, took a beating and kept on ticking.

I guess from time to time we all run into a product that disappoints us. I started receiving Aigner purses as gifts when I was in high school, and throughtout the years I have continued to buy them, I've never been disappointed and still carry some of the bags from years ago.

I was at The Shoe Dept. a few weeks ago and I noticed that they had a couple of Aigner bags, they did not appear to be geniune leather, but they were the Aigner Logo bags, I passed since the leather was questionable. It does seem that they have a lesser line out there now.
