Shampoos & Conditioners - What is the shelf life?

Started 1281181599.39 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1281271158.823 by AngelPuppy1

I was looking through my bathroom closet and realized that I had a huge stash of different shampoos and conditioners that have never been used. I forgot all about them! I have no idea how long ago I purchased them. I opened them up and smelled them all and they smell fine. Do these things go bad? I really don't want to toss them out - what a waste!!! What do you think????? {#emotions_dlg.huh}

I don't think the shelf life is indefinite, I'd give shampoo & conditioner 1 year tops, if stored optimally (not in hot humid environment, which eliminates the bathroom). If it's older than that, I'd see if the product smelled ok, if it had changed consistency or the ingredients had separated, and if so, toss it. If not, then it would be a use at own risk situation.

I usually don't have an issue with it as I don't keep that deep a stock of what I use (even when I find a great sale, I don't buy too deep, only what I'll use within the next 6 months or so, the retailer will always do the sale again within that time period).

Smile Good morning! I too have hair products that I forgot about some are unopened and some I have never used. I never thought of a expiration date, after reading your post.. I took my shampoos and conditioners out and smelled them and also took a little cup and poured some into the cup... some of them thinned out a bit .... so I tossed out what i thought was laying to long.. and kept the rest I hope that helps! Have a great weekend!Smile

2 year shelf life at least for shampoo and conditioner

Many products include a symbol on the container that looks like a jar with a number in it. That indicates the shelf life in months. Most shampoos I've seen are either 12 or 24.

Thanks, all! I think they should have dates on them?? Maybe some do, but I don't see any. Hmm, well, I'll just use my nose and if I'm doubtful I will just pitch. I must have been on a quest a while back and just gave up on finding the perfect one and shoved all this stuff to the back. ha-ha! Oh, well.
