Perm or Highlight First?

I need both but not sure which to get first. Had a perm last fall, first one in years, really liked. Just had to use a larger iron but had so much more body and "do" lasted all day. One of the best things was that I didn`t need to use so many products.

I perm during the school year and give my hair a rest in the summer. My stylist always says perm first, then color. The perm strips the color out of the hair. HTH

My stylist will not do both. I'd love to have a body wave but my color and highlights are more important. I know some places will do both but the fact that my girl won't tells me it's not a great idea.

Definitely perm first!!! But I would not do both close together. I did color first and then a perm over a year ago. What a mistake and I was mad that my stylist didn't know better. It stripped the color in my hair....what a waste of money!!! I had been coloring my hair for years. Then I went through a stage where I did not seem to have body so thought I should try a perm but wish I had not done that. I got so tired of dealing with the hair color thing that I decided to let myself go natural.........let the gray come in...........no looking back and no regrets.....I am what I am! It has taken about a year to get used to the gray but with a good hair cut/style and products, I am liking it more and more.

My stylist will do both because she says my hair is in such good shape. She also agrees that giving it a rest in the summer helps my hair a lot.

I've noticed some awfully, noticeably damaged heads of hair in people who combine color and perm. However much you like highlights and curls, nothing looks worse than frizzy, split-ended, "fried" hair! I think I'd choose one or the other.

Questions: How long is your hair? What kind of color do you have or want? How many months has it been since you had color?

You can do perms and color depending on what type of color you want. If you want a foil highlight with base color I would forget about the perm. If you want an all over permanent color you may do that a couple of weeks after the perm. Semi-color, a week after perming. The color may relax the perm but it's better to have a perm first then color and semi permanent colors can go darker if you use the same shade you used before perming.

If you have never had both perming and color at the same time (I mean within a couple of weeks) you will find your hair may become drier and possibly a little frizzy. More products to tame down the frizz. It's hard to call it a win win situation anymore. HTH

If you frost your hair with frosting bleach, I say NO to a perm. It never looks good.

Thanks for the replies. I have just a few highlights here and there, natural looking, have not had one since April. Maybe I`ll just do the perm for now, hair is neck length in back long layers and a bit shorter on the sides. Would something like Wen be good to use after a perm? I definitely don`t want the frizzy over processed look.

Yes...WEN would be VERY good after a perm. I would recommend fig on permed hair.
