Nail polish - do you wear only dark colors in winter and light in summer?

Started 1328614153.443 in Beauty Banter | Last reply 1328920422.35 by CarlaLynn

Do you just wear darker shades of nail polish in the winter and tend to wear lighter, more pastel shades in summer? Or do you wear all colors all year round?

I was tending to wear the darker shades in winter and the pastels in the warmer months. But lately, I find myself more drawn to the lighter, pastels, cremes, etc. all the time.

Just wondered how you felt about this. Thanks!

Whatever mood strikes me. Many times in winter I will even blend a white toned polish with a darker tone on a piece of aluminum foil (mix w/cheapo brush from Michael's Crafts) and apply. Mixing certain colors can give a darker undertone to a normally 'light and fresh' pastel color.

That's really neat! I would have never thought of doing that. Learn something new every day. Thanks for the tip.

The key is to play around with the ratio of colors because when I started doing this years ago, I had it in my head to do 50/50, but have found that sometimes just a 'hint' of a color combined with another can have more impact. For instance, I had a dark blue polish that was just too dark - so I mixed a light silver with it (cream polish) and it made it a very pretty car-like color!

Yes. Although some colors like creams are fine for all year round.

I think it looks funny when people wear lilac & other pastel colors in winter.

I sometimes wear a white color in the winter (with a clear glitter polish on top) that has flecks of green, blue and silver in it...reminds me of snowflakes.

I wear Pink and Whites (Forever French) on my finger nails and I'm wearing OPI's I'm not really a waitress on my toes. It doesn't really matter what season it is. I will wear this Winter or Summer. I do change my colors on my toes but season has nothing to do with it.

I used to be much more conservative choosing colors....mostly I used light pinks and lavendars depending on my week. HOWEVER, for some reason, since I turned 65, I am getting more adventurous. Right now I have silver glitter on my toes (love it!) and a pretty purple metallic on my fingernails.....it just makes me smile. I think beauty products should make us feel good about ourselves, otherwise, why bother?!Smile

I consistently wear light mauves and pinks all year 'round with the exception of December--then I go bright red for the holidays. I find bright or dark colors way too distracing to wear all the time.

I tend to wear darker colors in fall and winter. In spring and summer I wear lighter colors but never real pastels.

I wear mostly darks during autumn and winter. But I do love the brighter and lighter colors they come out with in their sets for a change from the darks. Like the pinks and corals in the OPI Touring America Collection for autumn, and the very light Zoya Feel Collection for winter.

Definitely darker colors in winter but I tend to go brighter but not pastel in the spring/summer.

Thanks a lot, everyone! I guess it's a mix. I just decided this morning that I want to be a little springy, so I applied Essie - French Affair - it's a very pretty creme pink/lilac. Makes my fingers feel perky!!! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I wear Nailtiques clear with Bubble Bath over it all year because chipped polish looks awful and light colors don't show chips. I think the dark colors that are redish lookes like dried blood. I know there are people who think they're great. Been thinking about trying the new pastels though.

I wear what I want. I see nothing wrong with light shades in the winter. The dark shades look horrible to me...blood red, dark blue, green, black. Sick! I'm 62 years old though so have a different perspective on things than some of you.

No, I mix it up. I'll wear dark in summer and lighter in winter.

In fact, I know a lot of people on these boards don't like this color, but one of my fav to wear in summer (aside from French which is my all time favorite) is Black.

I think it's sexy and chic and it certainly goes with everything {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Conversely, a pretty, subtle shimmer white, light grey looks great in winter....so, I guess it comes down to what I feel like at that time.

Yes, I am a member of the group who wears darks in colder months, sheers and pales in warmer months.

I dont actually wear dark polish at all, ever. I think it is very unflattering and makes hands and nails looks short and stubby. I prefer french manicure since it goes with anything and is a very flattering, clean and professional look (and very low maintenance) but also wear pale to medium colors on my nails. For toes I go with more variety but dont wear anything very dark- just dont like the look. I do use different colors by "season".

48, very fair, blonde, green eyes, cool "summer" coloring. Combination/sensitive skin. Vegetarian

I bought a gorgeous fall shade yesterday (ie in Februrary). It's a red/gold duochrome and I'm rockin' it right now.

I can't wear nude shades, I've tried and they just don't suit me. They make my skin look yellow and I feel like I look sort of zombiefied. I can wear pale pinks; slightly deeper pinks are better as a neutral for me. I wear any color any time of the year though.

I wear a lot of dark in the fall and winter months-my fave and go-to color is Essie's Wicked. And yes, when spring starts to hit, I like corals and reds. My hands look better with some color, so I tend to not use pale pinks or nudes. But sometimes I even run across a few of those colors that I like. So color me fickle!{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}
